Missing Out Of Fine Fall Eating?

August 21, 2009 by Gary Antosh

A few years ago a neighbor welcomed our family into the neighborhood with a basket of juicy, mouth-watering sweet corn right at frost time. This put me to thinking of all the delicious eating I had missed by not growing late crops of vegetables. And when my neighbor followed up with tasty beets, beans that were a delight to snap, and crisp radishes. I could hardly wait until the next July to start planting.

Now, several seasons later, I am convinced that most gardeners miss some of their finest eating because they fail to make midsummer plantings.

You can grow excellent crops of the following vegetables for late eating:

beans, lettuce, sweet corn, beets, carrots, peas, cabbages, onions, radishes

If you have space and time, you can add broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, cucumbers, Chinese cabbage, endive, kale, and spinach.

There are some problems connected with late plantings, but you can, with experience, lick them.

One is that of getting seeds to germinate and start growing vigorously during the hot, dry summer months. Attack this problem by soaking the furrow thoroughly with water before planting. Then cover the seeds (a little deeper than in the spring) with dry soil. To go all out in your attack, tamp the covered seeds lightly with the hoe and then loosen the surface with the rake or your hands.

Some gardeners also put a light covering of something like sawdust or straw over the row, regulating the depth of the mulch according to size of the seeds. You can put a heavy layer of straw, leaves, or grass clippings along each side of the row as soon as it is planted, leaving the row itself uncovered except maybe for a thin layer of straw or clippings.

You may, especially in the case of carrots and onions, even have to soak the row a few times after it is planted, but if you start this phase of the watering, continue it regularly enough to keep the ground moist until the plants break through, else a hard crust may form.

Set out plants during cloudy weather if possible, but if you have to set during sunny weather, shade the plants with something-maybe a shingle stuck into the ground.

If you use the above suggestions for getting your late garden started, you will almost always succeed. Now your second problem begins that of keeping your garden growing rapidly during the usual warm, dry summers. High quality of crops like beets and carrots depends greatly upon rapid growth.

Mulching with leaves and so on while the plants are growing will help tremendously in counteracting drought. This plus occasional watering will assure good crops. If, however, you do not mulch or water you’ll often raise much good food, for you’ll usually get rain before the plants actually suffer.

A third problem the late gardener faces is that of timing his planting and selecting the varieties that grow best. This means, for instance, that you should usually select the quick maturing and vigorous kinds. You will soon learn from experience the earliest and latest practicable dates for planting.

You may, in some cases, want to try later dates, and you’ll sometimes succeed with them. For instance, one year I pushed my “frost luck” to the extreme with sweet corn by planting on July 20. I gathered splendid ears from September, 30 to October 14, even though we had light, non-killing frosts on September 24 and 27. The two weeks of beautifully warm weather after the frosts saved the corn.

Two additional problems will confront you if you don’t prepare ahead. When I first began planting late gardens, I would invariably run out of some kinds of seeds (used them in the spring) and find it difficult to buy a few. I learned to buy more than I needed for spring planting.

Then I would run out of insecticides. I soon learned to judge how much I needed for the entire season.

I believe that once you give late gardening a real try, you will discover a delightful hobby. Raising vegetables, planting and replanting flowers under adverse conditions is a challenge to one’s skill. But with practice you can easily overcome the difficulties in planting, raising and replanting flowers.

Then when the members of your family are seated around the table eating juicy sweet corn on the cob, enjoying brittle, tasty carrot sticks, and praising you for the tender snap beans, you’ll start planning next year’s fall crop.

Organizing Your Garden Shed

August 20, 2009 by Susan M Adams

There is nothing more counter-productive than a messy, over stuffed, and disorganized garden shed. A garden shed should be thought of as a large closet. Closets are more functional and efficient when organized, as are sheds. Even a bit or effort at organizing your shed can go a long way.

If you can’t find your tools, and have to dig through half empty bags of potting soil and broken garden ornaments, this may lead to your gardens’ worst enemy – gardening procrastination. If you think about your shed like a big closet, and the only way a closet can be useful is if it’s organized, then maybe you’ll finally decide to get a handle on your shed clutter.

But how do you go about organizing your gardening stuff? Well, it may be hard to do, but the first thing you need to do to get things orderly and organized is to totally unpack your shed. Take out the rolls of wire would only be useful for fencing in a horse and a few cows (unless you have livestock, then it’s alright), remove the 12 cans of designer stain that have long ago separated because you left them in the shed all winter and they froze. Throw out everything that can’t be used, give away anything that you haven’t used in a year.

Now that your garden shed has been cleared out, this is a great time to fix it up, patch any holes, put a few more shingles on the roof, and repaint the window frames in this years hottest backyard trendy color. You can also use this time to look at that pile of tools you will be keeping and fix any wiggly handles, spray paint any metal with a colorful rust paint enamel, and oil up your shears and clippers.

Before putting items back into your shed take the time to add shelves and or hooks. Although an assortment of three inch nails hung your father’s gardening tools, times have changed. In my opinion, those nails are an invitation for spiders to create string art in your shed. Go to your local hardware store and purchase some proper hooks. The hooks are inexpensive and sturdy and plastic coated. Proper hooks and shelving are a worthwhile investment.

The last step, and for me the most fun, is putting back the deemed essential garden shed items each in their own spot, with room to find and access everything required for effective gardening. Now that everything has a spot, and your garden shed is the picture of organization, you will be more likely to approach your gardening with less dread. Garden shed organization is definitely worth the effort.

Filter Pur, An Excellent Filtration System, Water That Tastes Great

Water is a pure and natural element that will help to clean and hydrate your body, helping you to maintain your organs and muscles working at their optimum level. A Filter Pur filtration system, which is just water brought to you in its most natural form, will help to keep your body free of harsh toxins and chemicals and help to keep your excellent health. A filtration system, which is water in the optimum manner, will assist you in combating germs and impurities while eliminating harmful toxins. Filter Pur is recommended by a large number of people, especially those in health related areas.

This amazing company was first introduced in 1986 with a desalinator that turned seawater into fresh drinking water. A hand operated filtration system, water pure as from a spring, was instantly available to those on the sea. Life rafts today carry Filter Pur as a standard piece of equipment.-After much scientific research and testing, portable water purifiers were presented in 1990 for hikers and visitors to areas where water might be questionable. This Filter Pur line of carry-on purifiers was an answered prayer to the Peace Corps and African missionaries that longed for a filtration system, water that would not cause illness.

With technology proving that it was possible to eliminate harmful toxins, Filter Pur took the next step and, in 1994, designed the first line of in-home water filters with an Automatic Safety Monitor Gauge to protect you from filters that stop working properly.-This filtration system, water at its best, can be fitted right on to your faucet for easy everyday use but comes with an on/off switch for maneuverability. The built in electronic filter life indicator shows exactly how much filter life is left so you can always replace before your filter’s life is exhausted.

Toxins can enter your drinking supply through the ground, if you have well water, or not be totally removed from city water. The percentage of impurities allowed in municipal drinking water is so high that you always get a certain amount of poisons right out of your faucet! Traces of drugs, bacteria and other impurities have been found when tested in most city water systems.-The Filter Pur has been certified and in 2005, earned the Stockholm Industry Water Award, not an easy mark to achieve, for outstanding quality and innovation. A five year limited warranty accompanies each unit assuring each filtration system, water pure from the start, will give you the purest form of water available anywhere.

Up to one hundred gallons of quality water is provided to last an average of two to three months and unlike many filtration systems, is interchangeable with any faucet mounted system so there is never any additional costs for parts.-The Filter Pur filtration system, water that you can count on no matter where you are, is a must in today’s world of travel or at home. With the petroleum-based products used today, pesticides and new strains of bacteria, why wouldn’t you want to protect your body and family from danger? Filter Pur is simple and inexpensive, a great guard against harmful everyday impurities. A filtration system, water now purified, is now as easy as turning on your faucet.

Hand Held Bug Zapper

If you are not yet acquainted with the electronic insect zapper, you are really going to like it and if you have used one before, I bet you’ll welcome it back like an old, long-lost pal! The handheld bug zapper does just what it says it does: it zaps bugs. But it does it really, really well.

Any bug that comes into contact with the electronic bug killer is fried. Smaller bugs like gnats and mosquitoes are vaporized with a very satisfying flash and a crack. Larger insect, like house flies and wasps die, but don’t explode like the smaller ones.

Think about it, how many times have these flying insects taken the edge off an otherwise lovely evening in the garden? Or how many times have you not been able to get a good night’s sleep, because you know there’s at least one mosquito in the bedroom. It has happened to me dozens and dozens of times, I know! It is very satisfying to get one’s own back with the electronic bug killer.

I don’t like killing anything without just reason – I’m married to a Buddhist- but mosquitoes? I’m sorry, they can die. And the electronic bug killer does it without any messing about. No waiting and hoping they’ll fly into the ultraviolet light and then into the mesh. No, one swish of the electric insect zapper and the mosie’s gone and you can hear whether you killed her or not. (I say her, because the sucking mosquitoes always are females – honest, I wasn’t being sexist).

There are two basic sorts of electric bug zapper. There’s the battery operated bug zapper and the rechargeable electric bug zapper. Both work on the same principle, but I prefer the rechargeable type, although I suppose you could use rechargeable batteries too. (I bet they would be more expensive that the bug zapper in the first place). Anyway, I have been using a electronic bug zapper of the rechargeable kind for five years and I am ecstatic about them.

Nowadays, I spend a lot of time in Thailand with my wife, so you can bet your bottom dollar that I give my electric insect killer a good work-out practically every evening. We usually eat in the garden in the evening and all socializing is done outside by tradition, especially in the country, where we live. So it comes in very handy. I also use my electronic bug killer to ’sweep’ the bedroom for bugs before we go to sleep at night. Just like a CIA agent.

The electric bug zapper just seems to improve every time I buy one, which makes it difficult to give you definite specifications. The electric bug zappers I had four or five years ago, sometimes failed within six to nine months of purchase, although their ability to hold a charge reduced a lot after four or five months.

However, the latest hand held insect zapper will easily last 9-12 months and still be very pokey after nine months. My newest model even has a strong torch called a headlamp built into it. I’m not sure what it’s supposed to be for, but if you think that revenge is sweet, you can attract mosquitoes with it and then zap them with your hand held insect killer.

Water Purifiers/Filters For A Better Health And Well-Being

August 17, 2009 by Zachus J Winestone

If you are someone that is interested in eating well and being healthy then you know that drinking water is an important part of that routine and having water purifiers/filters in your home can help you stick to this goal. There are a variety of different water purifiers/filters that you can choose from for the perfect solution for you and your family. It will save you money and improve your health and the health of your family as well. Clean water: now that is a value that the whole family can agree on.

Water is Good for You

Physicians suggest drinking no less than 8 glasses of water daily, particularly if you are engaged in physical exertion which causes sweat. Water improves your state of being by flushing out toxins. Remember, one can live without food for days but can only exist without water for one day. Keep that in mind and take measures to install a water purifier or filter in your home to make drinking more palatable.

Every one at home drinks a lot of coffee and too many sodas partially because its easy and tastes great. By having water filters/purifiers installed in your own house, you can make sure that you get purified tasty water in almost no cost. Be a role play for your kids and help them develop a good habit of drinking plenty of water.

Why Filtered Water Is Best

There is no reason why you can’t drink water straight from the faucet in most cases. However the source may result in having a less than palatable taste or in the case of well water, an influx of toxins from the soil somewhere in the vicinity. Your best bet is to get a water purifier or filter which will make your drinking water safe and inviting to drink.

Tap water levels are closely monitored annually, however it still can contain contaminants. To avoid concerns about toxins it is in your best interest to consider a water filter/purifier so that you can get back to enjoying your drinking water.

Better Than Your Normal Bottled Water

Many people enjoy the convenience and taste of bottled water, but it can get expensive. By reusing a few water bottles or getting some nicer thermos type bottles you can fill them up from your water purifiers/filters at home for pennies. Kids and adults will love the cool variety of water bottles available and everyone in the family can have their own.

Importantly, the water from water purifiers/filters is cleaner and better for you than bottled water. The standards of the city water are not always good which is the same as the Bottled water. In fact, in several studies popular brands of bottled water were found to have more contaminants than New York City tap water. So, this simply means that the water from water purifiers/filters at home is clearly so much better.

Be Diligent About Deciding On The Appropriate Central Air Conditioner System For Your Home

August 16, 2009 by Graham Williams

When you are selecting an air conditioning unit, your main aim is to find out the best application to cool off as well as dehumidify the air in your home. When it comes to choosing your central air conditioning unit you will need to opt for either a split system or one that is contained in a cabinet. It is also a good idea to check out a number of different options before selecting a particular central air conditioning unit.

Permanent Installation Models

There are small permanent models as well as large ones. You can install some of the smaller simple versions yourself, but some of the larger versions should be installed by a professional. If the option is either a small unit of no unit for those long summer days, the small unit is the way to go as even a little bit of cooling is better than none.

Today, as many as eighty percent of all US homes have a central air conditioning unit installed and the reason for so many units being installed is that these units help to maintain ideal temperatures through use of excellent dehumidifiers and filters. What’s more, these systems will also prove to be very useful for people that suffer from allergies or who are asthmatic.

You will find that these units can be installed into homes that don’t already have them. You must always figure out the correct footage of your home when you are trying to get a system that is optimized for your surroundings. Fortunately, central air conditioning units are available in different sizes though at the same time you will also need to ensure that in order to get proper dehumidification that you do not choose too large a size. It will therefore pay to get a professional contractor to calculate the right size for your central air conditioning unit and they can do this by employing a method known as “Manual J.”

Be sure that you take into account the SEER ratio or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio when you are doing your shopping around. A number of 7 or 8 is acceptable but the higher numbers of around 13 are preferred. Making sure that the unit comes with a “Scroll technology” compressor is vital for energy conservation, and you also want to check out the energy star rating to find out how much energy the unit truly uses.

When you have one of these units installed, it is possible to save money on the costs of usage by being smart about how they are used. Probably the best way to ensure that the unit is cost effective is to make sure that the unit has a high SEER rating. Another great way is to make sure that you keep the unit maintained regularly.

The Reasons Why Dogs Snore

August 15, 2009 by Rod Jones

We all know that it is not unusual for pet owners to permit their pets to sleep with them at night. In fact, one third of pet owners have at some point, allowed their pets to sleep on their beds. Dogs provide a companionship that can’t be given by any other kind of animal. However, this doesn’t mean to say that some people do not let their cats or another pets sleep with them too.

It is made easier too because dogs have a sleep pattern that is very much like ours. Dogs often rely on their masters with complete trust, which makes them a bit more relaxed during the night. This explains why most dogs fall to sleep easily and later on, enter into deep sleeps where REM sleep activities can occur. In fact, once dogs enter this stage, the owner needs to call them several times before they can truly be roused from sleep.

I’m sure, lots of us have already witnessed a dog ‘running’ during sleep or at times, barking with his eyes closed. These dogs are believed to be dreaming. Breathing patterns can also be observed among dogs. For instance, there are breeds which breathe more heavily while there are those who breathe very lightly. The heavy breathers are much more prone to snoring than those who do not breathe as heavily.

Often, dogs that snore can be quite a nuisance during the night, depending on the degree and frequency of the phenomenon. Like with humans, there are various reasons why dogs snore, although most deal with the obstruction of the passage of air in the throat, which in turn is caused by the collapse of certain areas along the throat. It is the same problem as with humans.

A snoring dog should be checked for various issues to determine which treatment can be best provided. Some dogs are especially prone to specific allergic reactions that cause constriction in the airway. It may also be that there is some excess tissue in the areas that are inhibiting correct breathing. It is best if a veterinarian checks on various factors through careful evaluation of the dog’s anatomical features and general physical symptoms.

Is you dog overweight? I ask this because, like with humans, obese dogs are more likely to snore than thin ones. This is because they have more tissue surrounding their windpipes. Therefore, they have excess tissue hanging around the throat which can potentially cause obstructions. Once this problem is corrected, the risk of snoring will be decreased. This would not only be healthy for your dogs, you may eventually enjoy a decent night’s sleep too.

Snoring also has something to do with the general facial features. Some dogs seem to have squashed faces which narrows their air passages to a certain degree. The construction of their nasal passages also largely contributes to their difficulty of breathing. They are pretty much like humans with a cold, who are forced to breathe using only twenty-five percent of their nostril capacity. Dog breeds with shorter faces need to expend lots of effort to breathe properly. It takes them more work to control breathing and they are also more prone to snoring.

Minor surgery can give your dog great relief. Be sure though that before any decision is made, you are well educated about the potential risks and consequences of surgery to stop a dog snoring. Most are irreversible, so careful thought must be given to any operation you allow. In fact it is best to follow the guidelines provided by your veterinarian.

Updating Your Roof With Clay Tile Roofing

August 14, 2009 by Scott Rodgers

Roofing is the most essential component of the building. So, its installation is the costliest and most tedious from all the works. The exterior architecture of the clay tile roof is classy, but accidentally the roofs are not. The roof is such a part of a building that can not be changed on a regular basis. Hence, roof installation should be carried out very efficiently, such that the roofs complete their average life which is about fifteen years.

The structure of roofing should be dependable on the climatic nature and the area where you are living. Every time make a point that, the roofing type fits the style of your house and matches with the climatic conditions of your area. With clay tile roofing you do not have to put in much effort for its maintenance as it stays for a longer period than any other types of roofing.

A clay tile roofing has many advantages, but one of its drawback is that these tile can not be installed by anyone and everyone. So a specialist is required for it. Also while renewing it, you will have to face the same problem.

The clay tile roofing requires special materials and the cost is also higher than other types of roofing. This type of roofing is only suitable for hot climates where the roof is covered with clay tiles and fights against the scorching sun and heat.

It is not really a tough task to repair the clay tile roof. But if you have some handy tools with you, you can try your hands on repairing it. The first job is to clean the fractured mortar with a cold chisel and hammer. Then replace the cap tiles in a proper manner. You have to be very careful to the synchronization of the tiles so that you can arrange them in the same order.

After this part gets over, soak the tiles in water for few hours. Then mix cement and sand in a ratio 1:3 and add enough water to prepare a stiff mixture. With the help of a trowel, the mixture is spread all over the area where there was mortar before.

Then refill the tiles and polish up any mortar intruding into the trowel. If any major repair is required, then do hire a experienced roofer.

This type of roofing environment friendly and can be used again easily.

Choosing The Right Roofers

A beautiful view of the surrounding trees and open grounds adorns our house is located on the suburbs. My husband works as an automobile engineer for a car manufacturing company. It is the community school located near the neighborhood where our two kids go to study.

Before leaving my job to take care of my house, I was working as a student counselor in a college. It has been three years since I have taken up any job. I am quite happy managing the house. With a house that has two energetic kids, managing a house is not an easy job.

To run the house smoothly, it is very important that every system in house works without a stop. Any one of those systems breaks down, then it’s catastrophe for me! Though our house is fairly new, it has its share of occasional mending and repairing needs.

I usually hire the local home improvement service providers to do the necessary fixing jobs since I do not have any expertise in the Home Improvement business. Having so many years of experience under their belt, it is better to leave this kind of specialized work in the hands of experts and professionals.

The roof of our house is one of things that often give us a headache. We often encounter incessant rains and heavy storms, as we are located in such a region. So that it does not get blown off or tears apart, it is very imperative that the roof of a house stands strong and stable in these kinds of extreme conditions.

Local directory helped us in finding the local roofers in our region. Since there were many roofers specializing in providing roofing solutions, we decided to do some research. Based on advices we received and by asking many people around our neighborhood for their opinion helped us choose the best roofing company.

We asked them make the roof stronger to withstand the onslaught of heavy rains, especially since the monsoons were going to arrive in a few months. They installed metal roofs as they are much stronger and sturdy that other conventional roofing systems.

Since the roofing problem of the house has been tackled, my attention now is to repair the plumbing systems of our house. Since there are some leakages here and there, I have to take out some time to fix them as well.

Make Your Backyard Your Own With DIY Shed Plans

Garden sheds are a wonderful item to have in your backyard, but before you do anything there are a few things that you should think about before you pick a shed. First, you will want to consider the size and space you will need.

What items will you be putting in your shed? You will also need a good place to build your shed, this includes an easy place to get to and fit it to your taste. You’ll also need to see if your city requires any zoning permits before you begin construction. After considering all of these numbers you just have to decide if you want to pay someone to build it for you or choose DIY Shed Plans. These plans come with a high recommendation for several reasons.

The first reason to purchase DIY Shed Plans is for the most obvious reason: the ability to customize your very own garden shed. Each household has different reasons for needing a garden shed. Some families will use it to store their off season tools and items. Others will use it as an active storage area where all the tools are kept and such.

Whichever plan you choose, the shed will require items, such as shelves, hooks, etc., and these also can be customized to fit your needs. These DIY Shed Plans will give you a great shed as long as you put in effort and time.

The second reason to purchase DIY Shed Plans is because it will be much cheaper than purchasing a manufactured shed. Once you have the plan, it will get you a list of the building materials you will need. Researching and looking for the best quality and best deals is recommended because some distributors might be overestimating the value of their products. This way, instead of paying a fixed price for a pre-built shed you will be able to carefully select your materials for the best value.

You will also take pride in your shed building and once you are done you can take a deep breath and know you built a great shed from great DIY Shed Plans. Not only will your new garden shed be a fine addition to your home but will stand as a reminder of what you are capable of.
