Ways To Locate Leaks In Your Water Line

The problem of water leakage can ruin your financial budget to a large extent as the water usage gets increased owing to these unknown leaks.

Calling a plumber straightaway can take a heavy toll on your monthly budget. Instead, take up the project in your own hands as such a minor task doesn’t necessarily call for the involvement of an expert.

Distribute the entire task into two phases. The first phase would cover the test to determine the leak in your plumbing setup whereas the second phase would involve the actual task of locating the source of leak and diagnosing it accordingly. To determine the presence of leaks in your water line, turn off the main water supply to the entire home and check the reading on the water meter.

Most common place to look out for a water meter is either the basement or the side walk of the house. It has an appearance similar to that of the typical electrical meters wherein a dial notifies the reader about the value of the water usage.

Once all the plumbing units of the home are not able to receive any water from the mains, observe the reading in the water meter. A lethargic movement of the needle in the meter points to a minor leak somewhere in the plumbing fixture whereas a vigorous movement of the needle indicates a major leak.

Next step is to locate the exact location of the leak. In order to do so turn off the valves of each of the individual elements of the toilet and notice a change in the meter dial. If the dial slows down or comes to a halt then the source of leakage is in your toilet. If no such observation is made then move on to the other plumbing components as well. Turn off the water to the kitchen and again notice the water meter dial. No change in the position of the dial means that the kitchen components are sound and operating well.

Make sure that the plumbing fixtures lying outside your home are also tested for the leaks and are not neglected. The affiliated systems such as irrigation system, sprinkler system etc. that rely on your plumbing setup directly or indirectly, have to be examined as well.

If all else fails then make way for a plumber to handle the situation as the solution to the problem may take you to your service provider as well.

We all want our homes and gardens to be wonderfully decorated and to have great light sources. We can choose the color, the shape, and the type of paper in accordance with how much light we want to have. We can choose between two forms of lighting: electric with light bulbs or LEDs, or burning candles. We can also choose them according to where there is a suitable location for placement, hanging them out on the porch or putting them right on the floor as decorations.

After much consideration in order to choose the right paper lanterns, most of us will select hanging lanterns with bulbs or LEDs, as they are much safer for our children.

When night comes and children go to bed, many of them are afraid of the dark and they need a light left on in their room. But a strong light is not appropriate for the child’s eye health. This is why paper lanterns are the perfect solution to be left on at night, due to the soft glow they provide. Children are very curious and they have so much energy, so you have to think long and hard before you install the lanterns.

In this way, the child will be out of danger. Even with this safeguard, you will have to explain to him about the potential dangers. This way your child will be prepared in case that he breaks the bulb or the paper touches the bulb.

Paper lanterns are for sale in more than just one color, so everybody can choose their favorite. It would be ideal for the child to choose the lantern that he is most fond of, with colors or patterns that he likes. You can even look for a paper lantern imprinted with your child’s favorite hero. It will make him very happy and will provide the best guardian your child could have for the night. In this way you have killed two birds with one stone. You can choose a custom imprinted model if your child doesn’t find anything he likes. They are custom made for every client with anything you can possibly imagine. You can even choose to have them designed with your child’s drawings.

Children can develop various artistic and motor skills if they are helped to build their own paper lanterns, especially if they are old enough. They can learn to cut with scissors watching the traced lines and can learn to build things following a pattern. Of course, precautions are necessary when implementing your child’s paper lanterns; nevertheless, your child will love having paper lanterns and you will be glad that he is happy.

Installing A Wall Telephone Outlet

November 16, 2009 by Scott Rodgers

It is never a wise idea to let your electrical components and appliances connect to the overall electrical architecture in an incomplete manner. The absence of the purpose-specific outlets from the setup doesn’t ensure a sound safety schema to your home.

One such task is the installation of the wall outlets for your telephone such that the phone apparatus connects well to the entire setup. The outlet also ensures that the telephone can easily be transferred from one room to another without getting involved in behind-the-wall tasks.

Hence the installation of these phone outlets becomes mandatory to smoothen the operation of the telephone and the affiliated wiring setup. Generally the home wiring structure is provided with three telephone lines.

The line 1 commonly uses a red colored wire for the negative or the ring lead and a green colored wire for the positive or the tip lead. Most households tend to go with the first line while connecting their phones to the electrical structure.

The line 2 utilizes a color code under which negative terminal is determined by yellow colored wire and the positive one by the black wire. For the line 3, the blue and the orange color represent the negative and positive leads respectively. This color coding helps you to characterize the three lines available.

Before moving to the job site, make sure that the main electricity is cut off from the fuse box or the breaker box. Keep a voltage tester and a screwdriver in tact so as to approach the task with complete safety assurance. Test the outlet to which the telephone is connected for it’s state of electricity. Once it is confirmed that the outlet is short of electricity supply, uncover the outlet and expose the underlying wiring setup. Observe the terminals to which the two innermost pins of the telephone jack are connected.

Tear off some length of insulation from the two wires with the help of a cutter or plier. Connect these wires to the determined terminals and screw them tightly to the fixture.

After the connections are made, screw the outlet plate on to the wall and finish off the installation job. Plug the telephone into the outlet to test it’s normal operation.

Easy Ways To Fix A Clogged Toilet Bowl

November 15, 2009 by Scott Rodgers

When it comes to handling the plumbing problems of your toilet, the issues cannot be left pending for long. Negligence on that front would disturb the overall sanitation schema of your home.

Hence it becomes mandatory to take up the task yourself and fix it as soon as possible. A predefined course of action has to be apprehended prior to the commencement of the project.

Beforehand, make sure that all the required plumbing tools are at your disposal accompanied by a first-aid kit. The basic tools would include the wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, roll of Teflon tape, masking tape, plungers, plumber’s snake etc. Once all the tools are arranged then move to the project site.

Start off the campaign by taking out the plunger from the tool kit. Position it on the hole of the toilet bowl and pump it gently to clear the clog. If the water is filled to the brim of the toilet bowl then overflowing may occur during the plunger’s operation. To prevent such a messy situation, make sure that the excess water is removed from the bowl with the help of a container with a handle. The handle would prevent you from coming in direct contact with the disgusting said waste accumulated at the bottom of the bowl. Depending on the intensity of the blockage, different types of plungers can be employed.

If the plunger fails to fix the clogged bowl then make way for an auger tool popularly known as plumber’s snake. It is a plumbing device that comprises of a long metal cable with two ends. One end of the cable acts as a crank or arm and the other end of the cable has a corkscrew auger which does the actual task of removing the clog.

Insert the business end of the snake into the toilet bowl and gradually push it inwards. Make sure that you turn the crank of the snake tool in a clockwise direction while it is pushed in. This enhances the efficiency of the corkscrew end and a better output is yielded.

Besides these traditional tools, certain chemicals which are available in the market can also be employed. Remember to take the necessary precautions before using these chemicals as they’re potentially harmful to the skin and the eyes.

Alternatively common household products such as bleaching powder, baking powder and vinegar can be poured into the toilet bowl to clean off the underlying clogs.

Coldframe Evergreen Cuttings

November 14, 2009 by Keith Markensen

One wonderful use of a section of a cold frame is growing your own evergreen cuttings. Take out about four inches of soil and put in a mixture of equal parts of sand and peat moss. Make cuttings of the tips of branches of the past season’s growth of evergreens, put them an inch deep, half inch apart in a row, two inches between rows in the sand and peat in the frame.

This works beautifully for all the different varieties of yew and for most of the junipers, and arbor-vitaes. I doubt if it will work for you for pines, spruces, hemlocks, and firs. Try some of the broad-leafed evergreens such as boxwood, being sure to get cuttings from hardy strains in your locality. Also try fire-thorn, the evergreen wintercreeper (Euonymus), and evergreen barberry. But I doubt if you will find it will work for rhododendrons, mountain laurel, and leucothoe.

If you need some evergreen ground covers – now (November) is a wonderful time to put in all the cuttings you will need of Japanese spurge, of any hardy interesting strains of the evergreen English ivy that you can find and of the many varieties of the creeping types of wintercreeper (Euonymus) used for ground covers. As for me, i have added ground covers around my norfolk island pine and a beautiful landscape was created.

Half the fun is to tuck in a few cuttings of this and that and the other thing just to see if it works. Soak the cuttings well after you put them in, being careful not to let them dry out from the time you take them off the plant until you get them into the cold frame.

Tack a piece of muslin on the inside of your cold frame sash to shade them and then fasten the sash on so it won’t blow off. After things freeze up, cover the cuttings – after thoroughly watering them – with a piece of gunny sack and fill in the top of the frame with leaves. The gunny sack is merely to make it easy to lift them out in the spring. Don’t expect any of them to be rooted before May and some like the boxwood may not root until late summer. I will tell you later what to do with them after they root. But the big thing is that they do not dry out anytime between now and when they are rooted and taken out of the frame. This is just one more use of a cold frame.
