How To Find The Right Patio Furniture Covers

December 21, 2009 by Adam Pink

Have you ever looked for outside patio furniture covers? It’s not as easy as it sounds. Every time my kids want to eat outside I feel like I need to wash down our patio table as it generally covered with squirrel prints and bird poop. I just wasn’t comfortable with my family eating off the table before I had a chance to give it a scrub in some soapy water.

Without annual or bi-annual maintenance my patio furniture really can show its age. I have some great patio furniture. It’s the kind that looks a lot more expensive than it really is. I was able to get it for half price at Lowes about five years ago and I have loved it ever since. The other reason I am searching for some new patio furniture covers is that the elements can be unkind to the finish. The furniture has really aged fairly well but it takes some diligent annual maintenance.

Almost every autumn I have a fall clean up ritual that involves the whole family. I lightly sand the table and chairs, re-apply a teak or walnut stain and then rub some furniture oil into the wood. The patio furniture really looks fresh and nice when I’m finished. Undoubtedly, this little effort has saved me money by adding years to the life of my furniture. I don’t really mind the job and enjoy the fact that it has become a family tradition. However, having some new outdoor patio furniture covers might allow me the time to do other fall clean up jobs.

Basically I want new outdoor patio furniture so I can work less. I don’t want to wash the table 3 or 4 times per week and I’d prefer not to have to refinish the table every fall. There are remarkably few stores that stock these covers. The covers I have seen were either overly priced, darn ugly or the wrong size. Furthermore, I have spoken to my extended family about buying covers and it would appear they aren’t a must-have item for this year.

Given the effort I’ve put into finding the covers, I have been able to clearly define what I need to get out of the covers. The covers need to be water resistant and washable. I’m ok with covering the furniture with a tarp during the harsh winter so the patio furniture covers don’t need to stand up to snow and freezing weather. They need to be reasonably priced. In my mind, I should be able to cover 4 chairs and a 3.5′ by 6′ patio table for under $100US.

Buying outdoor patio furniture covers can be harder than you think. When you factor in price, colour, and quality you greatly narrow the field. Furthermore, I find the covers are less available than I would have thought. I am seriously considering having these covers custom made. I’m going to write articles and blog on patio furniture covers until I finally find a set that suits me.

With Outdoor Heating You Can Use Your Patio All Year Long

An outdoor heating system will enable you, your family and friends to enjoy entertaining on your patio throughout the year. Modern outdoor heaters are attractive, compact and can generate enough warmth to keep you warm, even on the chilliest of days or nights. Gone are the days when you all had to huddle around the hearth in your living room.

Outdoor heaters can be obtained in three types: table-top, permanent, or free standing. There is a huge range of patio heaters that can be purchased in all three of these categories. Chimineas and backyard pit fires can be used as heaters as well as grillers, so you can still enjoy a barbecue at any time of the year.

If you want to be able to move your outdoor heater around, you should choose either a free standing type or a table-top type. But if you prefer to have the heater in a permanent position, then choose a permanent type. A heater that is permanently installed will provide lots of warmth.

Having a permanent heater on your patio is a good option because a gas line will be attached to it. This means you won’t have to keep changing an empty tank of propane gas. The only drawbacks are that you can’t move the heater, and you will have to pay for it to be properly installed.

A gas charcoal fireplace is hassle free and it looks great. These fireplaces even have glowing embers that look exactly like burning charcoal so they create a cozy atmosphere. And they are safe, especially when children are around.

Table-top outdoor heaters are really good sellers. These heaters run off propane or natural gas. They are easy to use and have a safety mechanism that turns the heater off in case it falls over or is bumped. And of course they can be easily moved around.

An infrared patio heater will certainly add to the decor on your patio. These heaters are stylish and mounted on tall graceful stands. You can choose either a copper finish or a brushed steel finish. Infrared heaters run off gas which distributes infrared rays. They are really warm and will be effective during even the coldest weather. These heaters are especially suitable for hotels and restaurants.

You can also get outdoor electric heaters. The obvious advantage with these is that you won’t have to pay for gas. The electric heater looks very like an air conditioning unit. They are usually mounted high up on the walls of your patio, beneath the ceiling. Electric heaters don’t produce the odor or fumes associated with gas heaters so they are very user-friendly.

The really great thing about electric heaters is that they produce instant heat. The moment you turn it on, you will instantly feel heat. You certainly don’t want your guests shivering and shaking on your patio while you’re waiting for that old heater to get into gear.

So now you’ve got a good idea of what’s out there regarding outdoor heating. Your choices are numerous. No more winter blues for you – you can enjoy your patio throughout the year! All you need is a good modern outdoor heater.

All That You Need To Know About Chicken Coop Building Plans – Don’t Get Suckered Into Purchasing Bad Plans!

Chicken coop building plans aren’t all that tough. Indeed, many folks are finding that taking a DIY approach can be a excellent idea. Even if you’re actually not into arts, crafts, and building, you should be able to construct a chicken coop with the right kind of plans. You may save both time and cash by going this route.

So, what do you look for in chicken coop building plans? How will you know which ones to go by? Well, there are a couple of things about the neatest ones that truly stand out . For one thing, a good guide will explain all of the materials and supplies you will need. It will also provide you with pointers on how to build the coop in a way that could be a benefit to both you and the chickens. As an example, a good set of plans will explain to you the importance of size. It is usually a good idea to build a coop that could be a bit too large than too small. Always go a bit bigger, as you never can say when you might need to expand in the future. And, the more room you provide your chickens with, the healthier they will be.

You certainly can get started with a smaller sized coop, although if you ever decide to expand sometime down the road, you won’t be in a position to since the space will be limited. You never need to limit yourself on the quantity of chickens you can raise in a healthy environment.

Chicken coop building plans should also include information about building close to a clean water source. They will need fresh water every day, and you’ll be the one providing it to them. To make things easier on yourself, you need to build the coop close to wash water so you will not have to keep going backwards and forwards.

If you live near other animals, then you may wish to shield your chicken from them. Even if you do not have any other pets, you never can tell when a raccoon or stray dog or moggy will come onto your property. So, you need to build a wired fence all round the coop. It should go a pair inches in the ground so that other animals can’t dig under it.

Wood – Where Winterizing Roses Starts

December 15, 2009 by Gary Antosh

Roses need to be “winterized” for the season. The bushes should be checked closely for dead or diseased wood which should be removed; competing branches that cross or rub need to be corrected; it is also wise to remove or shorten unusually long canes that might be injured by high winds or snow and ice.

Faded blooms and unopened buds killed by frost should be removed, and it might be well to remove the few remaining scraggly leaves in this fall clean-up. Paint any cuts with a pliable tree paint to prevent dehydration or the entrance of disease or cane borers. An application of two cups of slow-acting bone meal dug into the soil around each plant will be available when growth starts in early spring. Soil can be pulled up around the base of the canes to provide protection against severe freezing. Although planting is recommended in some areas, it is not best in the South of mid-America. February is the most desirable time for planting or replanting of roses.

Perennials

In removing the killed tops of these plants, leave about two inches of stem. These stubs will help mark the permanent plantings. Many successful gardeners remove about one inch of the top soil around perennials and replace with a top dressing of clean sand as a sanitary measure. This is good practice for garden cleanliness.

Dormant root perennials just like philodendron plants can be planted throughout this month. Many are available at the local seed stores and plant houses. Peonies are available and should be planted this month. Select the three to five eye divisions for best results. In planting, remember they are heavy feeders. Supply them with a good amount of available plant food. Keep the tubers out of direct contact with manure or commercial fertilizer as rotting can be caused by it.

Window Boxes

These can be kept bright and exciting all winter by planting with dwarf evergreens or young evergreens that can be transplanted to a permanent location in the spring. Even tips of evergreen branches can be plunged into the soil of window boxes where they will make a pleasing show for weeks at a time. Plan regular displays of permanent materials throughout the winter in an otherwise uninteresting area.

A Thanksgiving theme for November, Christmas for December, snow scenes for January, and on and on – this is another chance to interest the child or provide an interesting “window scape” for a shut-in. With a little imagination, window boxes can become a wonderful part of garden activities.

Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets

December 13, 2009 by Dr. Markho Rafael

Mycelium Running by Paul Stamets has been the perpetual best-seller on popular mycology since published in 2005. It’s an indispensible reference book for anybody working the land, especially foresters, farmers and environmental cleanup contractors. It’s also a great book for anyone interested in growing their own food mushrooms.

The book is filled to the brim with valuable information on how to improve soils for farming, gardening and forestry; create simple, low-cost biofilters for waste water (mycofiltration); and clean up toxic waste (mycoremediation).

As an example, a method for building a mycofiltration bed to filter waste water is described in exacting detail. Dimensions, depth, layers and recommended materials and mushrooms are listed. This mycofiltration is useful, among other things, for filtering manure enriched farm runoff.

Added perks when using mycofiltration is that the beds also yield crops of scrumptious food mushrooms, and every 2-3 years, as the bedding material needs to be replaced, the old material can be spread on the farm fields as a rich fertilizer.

Also useful for farmers is the information on no-till farming, which involves a method of leaving the stubble on the field until the next crops is planted. This encourages the development of saprophytic fungi, which break down old plant matter at a pace that’s highly beneficial for new plant life. In contrast, the conventional method of plowing down the stubble after harvest promotes anaerobic bacteria, which decompose organic substrate too rapidly. The saprophytic fungi also help prevent soil erosion and leaching of valuable nutrients and top soil.

For forestry, not only do saprophytic fungi help break down and recycle organic matter. They also help combat many parasitic fungi (blights) that may kill large numbers of trees. Stamets gives useful suggestions on how to seed beneficial saprophytic fungi in blight infested forests as a natural “fungicide,” fighting fire with fire, so to speak.

The symbiotic mycorrhizal fungi can also be seeded in forests to promote healthy trees. Or they can be protected and naturally promoted through wise and informed forest management.

Most plants benefit from partnerships with mycorrhizal fungi, especially trees, which become much more drought resistant as well as disease resistant when they partner with a mycorrhizal mushroom species.

Mushroom mycelium can also be utilized to clean up toxic waste sites through a method known as mycoremediation. The term was invented by the author of Mycelium Running, Paul Stamets, but was in common use before the publication of this book.

Contaminants that may be effectively mycoremediated include, but are not limited to, heavy metals, pathological bacteria (such as E. coli), petrochemicals, neurotoxins, dioxin, toxic dyes and other toxic industrial waste.

At $50 per ton, mycoremediation is a very cost effective method to clean up toxic waste. Conventional incineration may cost upwards of $1,500 per ton.

All that is just in the first half of this 300-page book; the second half is an instruction manual on growing your own mushrooms and mycelia, which is something that may be of interest to forest managers for mycoforestry, environmentalists for mycoremediation, farmers for increasing soil productivity, and the rest of us for growing our own gourmet mushrooms for food and medicine. In other words, this is a book for anyone and everyone.

How Does A Plumbing Drum Trap Work ?

December 12, 2009 by Scott Rodgers

In order to provide a serene plumbing setup to your home, certain components deserve a necessary accommodation. One of them is the plumbing trap.

It is a plumbing segment that ensures proper escape of sewer gases. It prevents the waste or sewer gases from coming back into the spaces of the home. The water-seal in the trap keeps the waste gases on the other side of the membrane. Also, the traps hold the objects that are not meant to be drained. In fact, the traps are known as ‘traps’ owing to this particular function.

Of all the varieties of traps available, the drum traps are the most outdated one. In the present scenario, they have been replaced by the more sophisticated s-traps and p-traps. Though, they are now a thing of the past but they have their own offerings. This eliminates the need of replacing them if your household is still equipped with one such trap.

If you want to determine whether your trap is a drum trap or not then move to the vicinity of a plumbing segment such as a sink, bathtub or toilet. The presence of a miniature capped segment at the surface of the floor confirms the presence of a drum trap. This visible fragment is actually the access cap of the drum trap that allows easy unclogging job. To retrieve a heavy item from the drain, open the lid of the trap and remove out the concerned object.

This particular facility makes the drum traps very favorable. To unblock the drain, insert the business-end of a snake tool from the access cap of the trap. Within seconds, the drainage opens up and the clog is removed out.

The excess water that drains down the associated plumbing segment maintains a water-seal in the trap. This enables the trap to keep out the sewer gases from the vicinity of the home spaces.

Always remember to keep a large-sized bucket or container at you disposal while opening the access of the drum trap. The pressure of the water may result in an overflow. Also, keep the expertise of a professional in tact throughout the life of the project.

Make the replacement of the drum trap only when it starts giving you troubles.
