When you visit a florist to get a bouquet made, and see the wide range of options that he has to offer to you, it is easy to feel overwhelmed. What Makes A Flower Looks Beautiful: Importance Of Scent

January 20, 2010 by Alexxa Rufus

Flowers were the first ornaments, long before jewellery came along. Colourful and scented flowers have been fulfilling the purpose of beautifying people for ages. Most of the ancient cultures have seen both women and men using flowers in their hair or as garlands to put around their neck.

There are as many types of floral fragrances in nature as there are flowers. Colour, shape and scent are the three factors that have influenced the different moods that different flowers evoke in humans, and this in turn has determined which flower would fit which occasion. As many perfumes have been created by perfume manufacturers as there are varieties of flowers, and the uniqueness and subtle differences among flowers’ fragrances have offered the industry endless opportunities for many new products. However, now the utility of flowers in the perfume industry is somewhat diminishing as artificial ingredients have started substituting them.

The fragrance of flowers is important not just because they can be sealed in perfume vials. Flowers have served as fabulous presents for people by virtue of their scent and elegant appearance. The scent plays a critical role in cheering a person up and transforming the whole ambience of a room. To a seasoned florist, the definition of good bouquets is those that appeal to both the eyes and the sense of smell of a person. Moreover, hardly any auspicious ceremony is held without abundant use of flowers, whose fragrance wafts in the air and lingers in the whole venue.

Sadly, researchers have always channelled all their efforts towards the development of beautiful flowers that fade gradually, with peripheral consideration for fragrance. Other innovations in technology, such as genetic modification of plants have hastened this pursuit. For example, carnations and roses nowadays are a feast for the eyes, and stay fresh for many days, but sadly they have lost the delicate fragrance that was once a key part of their appeal.

Thus, how good a flower smells, or if it smells at all, must be the first concern for buyers when they are purchasing flowers. Expert advice of a seasoned florist will surely help you in making the right choice of bouquets or flowers in bulk that you are planning to purchase for a wedding or some other occasion.

Flowers can uplift spirits. When someone is sick, suffering or sad, friends, and family give a bouquet of fresh flowers to cheer them up. When someone says or does something they repent, a handful of flowers affirm the ensuing apology.

To locate a good florist in Singapore you can either do a simple research on the internet or enquire people about who has been in the business for quite some time now. Another way of picking a florist is that you go with a branded flower outlet. Firms doing roaring business will never compromise on quality or service, and so it is a wise decision to approach them, particularly if you are going for a bulk purchase.

While most landscaping ideas and design may be based on the preferences of the home owner there are also some aspects of garden pond landscaping that a professional may be better off doing.

Factors That Lead To A Successful Garden Pond

Garden pond landscaping means that the landscape architect or the do it yourself homeowner may need to remember some things. These things may include where the water source may be, the area where the pond will be placed, the size and depth of the pond and many others. The knowledge of the water source or tap is essential in supplying water for your pond when the need arises.

The area where you intend to place the pond needs to be considered carefully for the sake of the creatures that you will be adding to this garden pond landscaping idea. Too hot and the fish will die while moss will increase at a faster rate. The area needs to be able to accommodate the size and depth of the pond that will be used. Garden pond landscaping is ideal to raise fish and other creatures.

Some people think that a water pump is used to give fish their necessary oxygen. The fact of the matter is that it not only helps to aerate the water of the pond but it also moves the water around enough to keep it from developing moss and other organisms. A water pump to be used for the garden pond is beneficial for the creature sin the pond as it mimics tha movement of the current thus making the fish feel at home and less stressed. Garden pond landscaping will always require the need for a water pump that coordinates the amount of water it needs to pump daily with the capacity of the pump.

Allow Flowers To Say What You Can’t

Dating back to historical times, flowers have been used as a profession of kindness. We usually present them to those we care for. We give flowers to show them how special they are, to show admiration, to celebrate occasions, or even to sympathize. What we don’t know is that sending certain kinds of flowers, and even their colors, actually have meanings of their own.

Floriography: (Language Of Flowers)

During medieval and Renaissance times, flowers were often given moral meanings. This is evident in art where saints are often depicted with flowers that symbolize the saints’ virtues. In an edition of Sixteenth Century Journal, Liana DeGirolami Cheney stated that “some of the Christian symbols for Virginity or Chastity are the white rose, the myrtle, a vessel or vase, the lily, and the unicorn.”

During Victorian times, flowers were used initially to create or add emotion. The language of flowers, sometimes called floriography, began being used as a discreet form of communication. During the 18th century, sending cyphered messages using flowers became popular. Based on a Turkish secret language of flowers, known as Persian Salaam, a coded bouquet could be sent to express feelings of attraction or even love.

A book entirely about flower interpretations by Madame Charlotte de la Tour, “Le Language des Fleurs,” dates back to 1819. Another was written in 1884, titled “Language of Flowers” by Kate Greenaway, and it is still being used today.

Japan also has a language of flowers, which they call “Hanakotoba.” Greeting cards in Japan use the Hanakotoba code, and still use the flower-language in popular culture such as in movies and cartoons, like the anime series “Wei Kreuz.”

Well-Known Meanings Of Flowers

Purchase or borrow a dictionary of flowers to see the different meanings and interpretations of flowers. Some of the most well-known flowers and their significances are written below:

Buttercup – riches Pink carnations – a woman’s love Chrysanthemum – love in general Forget-me-not – true love Lavender – devotion, distrust Purple lilac – first emotion of love White lily – purity Peach blossom- long-life Red rose – true love Sunflower – pure and lofty thoughts Yellow tulip – hopeless love

A visit to a florist for the right bouquet may be a bewildering experience, as every flower shop gives you loads of choices. But as there are meanings and human events attached to every flower, the job of choosing the correct flower for a specific occasion becomes simpler. Once you are conscious of this meaning, you would be able to reduce your choices to a small group, from which you can easily select your bouquet.

The idea of flowers representing states of mind has been around for a lot of years, with the Victorians upholding it more enthusiastically than the people of other eras. While yellow roses stand for love that has more friendly and platonic overtones, the red ones represent love that is true and passionate. Colourful carnations and tulips also fall in the category of flowers bearing significance and messages for the recipients based on their colour.

Brilliantly coloured flowers are suitable for birthdays. For anniversaries, like 25 years, the most appropriate are luxurious and conventional bouquets with a suitable color scheme. To celebrate a birth, pink flowers are an obvious choice for a girl, and orange or yellow flowers for a boy. The type of flower most suitable for all these occasions are gerberas, these are vibrant and bold flowers..

Marriages are special occasions and most guests are expected to present bouquets to the couple. In such cases, the best bet is to have bouquets and arrangements that reflect the spirit or season of the marriage. If the marriage falls in spring, then a bouquet with spring flowers can be gifted to the couple, and in case of an old fashioned marriage a bouquet having a combination of white and red flowers can be gifted.

Colourful and bright flowers should be reserved for merry events like anniversaries and birthdays, and flowers like roses, daisies and chrysanthemums are the best for bouquets meant for such event s. On the other hand, for an event like a graduation, you would want to go for flowers more refined but still vibrant. Colourful lilies serve the objective well, and a blend of two to three colours adds an extra flavour to the arrangement.

Birthdays are generally a time for giving bold and brightly coloured flowers. For anniversaries, like 25 years, the most proper are luxurious and conventional bouquets with a suitable color scheme. In celebration of giving birth, pink flowers are great option for a baby girl, and yellow or orange flowers for a boy. Gerberas are brilliant and bold flowers, perfectly suited to a happy affair like a birthday, anniversary or birth.

Sombre flowers like white carnations are the most appropriate to mark an event of sorrow, like the recent demise of a loved one. A white bouquet or wreath conveys that the giver wishes the soul of the departed to rest in peace. On the other hand, a collection of bright flowers, such as tropical blooms are excellent for someone who is feeling unwell as vibrant bouquets made of these flowers are seen as wishing a speedy recuperation.

Finding the right bouquet for the occasion in a flower shop might seem like looking for a needle in a haystack, but advice of a good florist will make the job easy for you. If you are buying flowers from a well-known florist in Singapore, then the salespeople there will happily guide you in making the correct choice for your purpose.

How To Build Your Own Backyard Bird Bath

Bird baths are usually rounded shallow basins about two-inches deep within the center. The basin is propped up one meter from the ground to produce protection against cats. The peak of the elevation will depend on how high potential predators in your space can jump. These baths are commonly made of molded concrete. Ornamental motifs of cupid, flowers and leaves might be incorporated into the basin and pedestal. You can improvise bird baths from several household things, like; pie tins, deep food plates, even shallow cans. You’ll prop these up on high stands. Birds can conjointly often perch on wall fountains if these structures are near some tree branch to that they’ll easily retreat within the event of a threat. Bird baths are connected to deck railings or trees to cut back the utilization of space.

So as to stay your bird bath clean, replace the water daily after emptying and cleaning it. Keeping your bird bath sanitary with fresh water, all the time, keeps the birds healthy. It will also help in obtaining the birds to go to your home. Birds can keep away from an excessively sedimented and filthy water. Replacing the water in the tub basin daily works as much for your health as for the birds. If there are mosquitoes in your neighborhood, they’re sure to deposit larvae into the bird basin. Leaving the water standing will increase the amount of these pests circulating around your home, further as the danger of your family being infected with a mosquito-associated disease.

Bird baths may be designed as little garden fountains. Instead of just filling the basin with water, a faucet or spout drips water very little by very little into the bath. Excess water will drip out onto the bottom and to the adjoining grass. A gentle but slow draining technique could be applied to the plate to forestall water from exceeding the capacity of the plate. Dripping birth baths are terribly standard with birds.

Another variation of a bird bathtub is one in which the water within the basin is continuously and gently swirled thus that the result is to supply constant ripples within the water. There’s also a variant of bird baths that makes use of little cups organized round-stair-fashion one on high of the other and every one of then on high of the main tub basin. Water pours from the cup on prime down the ladder of cups into the basin. This style of bird bathtub is termed a “water chain” bath. It is a pretty sight to work out birds perched on the cups.

These baths are not simply ornamental in purpose, you’re conjointly providing birds clean and clear water. They can drink from the bathtub or bathe themselves. Bird pools are more popular with the bird population than bird feed. This could tell you one thing regarding how troublesome finding clean and contemporary water in some places will be.

Fumigation As A Useful Pest Management Technique

January 15, 2010 by Hector Milla

Fumigation is a technique of pest control that use fumigants to get rid of pests by filling an area with the fumigant. Fumigants are gaseous pesticides that have a fatal or harmful impact on pests. It can be carried out in soil, grain, crop and houses and is one amongst the most useful termite management techniques. Fumigants might be odorless and colorless, but they’re harmful to people and must not be inhaled. The most commonly used fumigants are phosphine, hydrogen cyanide, lodoform, chloropicrin, 1,3-dichloropropene, methyl isocyanate, formaldehyde and sulfuric fluoride.

Several steps are taken for the process of fumigation to be effectively carried out. The space to be fumigated is sealed before the fumigant is then released into the space. It is then left for a certain period of time for any infestation to be killed. On expiry of this period, it is then ventilated for the harmful gas to fade away. Tent fumigation is a kind of fumigation carried out in houses, whereby the home is covered in a tent. The fumigant is then released into the building and the tent sealed for the gas to work properly. Most tent fumigation treatments take a week although the period may be longer rely upon how serious the termite infestation is.

When should you fumigate your house? If your home is at least 5 years old and has not been fumigated, it’s wise to arrange for fumigation to be done in the building. This is because termites will go without being seen for a very long period of time and may not be obvious to the human eye. If the last fumigation done in the house was at least 5 years ago, you must repeat the process. If termites unexpectedly invade the home, fumigate it immediately before much damage is done.

If you have previously treated your home for dry-wood termites and that they keep recurring, it’s good to consider space fumigation. It can terminally get rid ofkill the termites. Furthermore if the building has spots of infestation, fumigation should be done.

Physical damage to wood whose cause you cannot seem to trace is a pointer towards potential termite infestation. Overlook might result in unalterable damage not only to your wood however other insulating and filtration materials in the house once the termites spread to every corner of your home.

If there are termites in other building near yours, consider fumigating your home as these pests move extremely quick and might reach your home within a very short time.

Fumigate a building that you have just bought before moving in as it might be infested with termites. It might also haven’t been fumigated before or if it was, it might have been years before. Doing so can save you future loss.

More and More People Taking Up Vegetable Gardening

January 14, 2010 by Sarah Duke

The number of home gardeners is on the rise. Households growing plants jumped 19% from 2008-2009 to 43 million households, according to the 2009 Impact of Home and Community Gardening In America study that was conducted by Harris Interactive for the National Gardening Association. At first glance, one might expect people to cite the recession as a motivating factor for their decision to garden. While a third said the recession affected their interest in gardening, another third said it had no impact whatsoever. In fact, the chief motivating factor of cultivating home-grown vegetables is “for better-tasting food.”

So just who are all these new gardeners? “The demographics of today’s food gardening households include a broad cross-section of the U.S. population. There are few other outdoor activities where virtually every demographic group is so well represented, no matter what their age, education, income, marital status, household size, gender, or regional location,” concludes the NGA report.

The food gardening experience is enjoyed primarily by women (54%), those ages 45+ (68%), college students (43%) and married couples with no children at home (67%). The gardeners are pretty evenly spread across the South, Midwest, West and Northeast. Those making $35,000 – $49,999 in household income are the most common gardening group (24%), although many who make over $75,000 (22%), under $35,000 (21%) and between $50,000 and $74,999 (16%) are also represented.

To get started, most households spent about $70 on seeds, garden supplies and gardening tools. The study of home gardeners found that the average, well-maintained 600-square-foot garden yielded 300 pounds of produce worth $600 in market value, which saved households $530 a year. The ten most popular vegetables grown included the following: tomatoes (86%), cucumbers (47%), sweet peppers (46%), beans (39%), carrots (34%), summer squash (32%), onions (32%), hot peppers (31%), lettuce (28%), and peas (24%). A number of people also grew corn, radishes, potatoes, salad greens, pumpkins, watermelons, spinach, broccoli, melons, cabbage, beets, winter squash, asparagus, collards, cauliflower, celery, Brussels sprouts, leeks, kale, parsnips, Chinese cabbage and rutabagas.

When asked why home gardeners are participating in the gardening experience, the overwhelming majority (58%) said they want “better-tasting food.” Over half of the participants (54%) say they want to save money on food bills; 51% say they want “better quality food” and 48% say they want “to grow food they know is safe.” About 34% of gardeners say the economic downturn has motivated them to grow food this year. Perhaps it’s the growing concerns over what is organic and what is sprayed with potentially harmful pesticides, which makes the average American consumer more skeptical of grocery store produce. Or perhaps it’s the recent scares we’ve had with tomatoes, peppers and peanuts this year. The National Gardening Association study revealed the underlying suspicions of the average consumer, but also this wave of frugality and earth stewardship that seems to be brewing as well.
