Should I Buy a Plasma TV ?

January 11, 2010 by Ari Guyer

The technology of a plasma tv can be complicated to understand. Many minuscule pixel cells are contained between two sheets of glass. The electrical components of the television produce electrical pulses which excite gas that is held in each pixel cell. The cells then glow and produce lights that are coloured red, blue, and green. When the colours are blended, the overall colour of the pixel is determined. That is what produces the images on your screen.

Plasma tv’s offer impressive black colours and high contrast levels create a pleasurable viewing experience. This is favourable when watching shows or movies with dark scenes. The brightness, colour saturation, and strong contrast result in sharp, vivid images especially in dimly lit rooms. Plasmas are ideal in rooms with low to moderate lighting. Plasmas have a glass screen which can reflect a lot of light. This can be problematic in a room with a bright lighting from windows, skylights, or other lighting sources. Some manufactures have added glare reducing features to their plasma tvs.

Plasma tvs are known to have a quick response time and the motion blur is negligible. Fast moving images are displayed accurately making plasmas an ideal choice for video gamers, sports fanatics, and movie watchers.

Because each plasma pixel produces its own light, plasma tv’s have a wide viewing angle. Images onscreen look virtually the same when viewed from the front or the side. TV placement and seating arrangement is not an issue with plasma televisions.

Plasma televisions used to have a problem with burn-in. Burn in is caused when static images are etched into the plasma screen. Plasma tv makers have now increased the time before burn in occurs which has corrected the etching problem.

Plasma televisions can be placed on a tv stand or mounted on a wall. Professional installation is often recommended due to the weight of the television. Care must be maintained when anchoring the tv as a 60 inch plasma tv can weigh over 100 pounds. Weight issues aside, plasma tvs have always been a great choice for people looking for large screen tvs. Up until recent years, they were the only affordable upgraded tv that was available in sizes over 40 inches.

The lifespan of a plasma television is approximately 60,000 hours. One could expect a tv to last about 20 years if watched 8 hours a day. When purchasing a plasma television it is important to consider energy usage. Many manufacturers now produce brands that are more energy efficient and emit less heat.

Research is important when it comes time to purchase a plasma tv. Knowledgeable sales people at electronics stores can help you determine which plasma tv is right for you. Discount department stores and warehouse outlets often have a large selection of plasma tv’s to choose from. If you prefer to shop without the pressure from a sales person, research can be done online. Websites can be used to compare brands and prices on specific models.

Scented Geraniums – How To Root Them

January 7, 2010 by Keith Markensen

Home gardeners find that rooting scented-leaved geraniums is not always easy. Often they have a favorite plant they want to propagate and after several attempts meet with failure. Among the many kinds, some root very easily, while others are very tricky.

Of the popular scented-leaved geraniums, the lemon-scented and the rose-scented varieties root easily and quickly under common propagating methods.

The lemon-scented (Pelargonium crispum) is a small stemmed plant, with tiny crinkled leaves, which requires considerably more water than most geraniums. Take cuttings about 3-3/4 inches long and trim off all leaves from the bottom up to 1-1/4 inches. Make a clean cut beneath an eye, dip the end into 3X rooting powder and insert the cuttings in clean sand, deep enough so that the lower leaves do not touch the sand. Shade until signs of growth are evident. Then remove shade and keep plants a little drier.

Oak-leaved varieties (Pelargonium quercifolium) are not too difficult. Take tender cuttings, but if they are hardened, root them under drier conditions. A 1X rooting powder is best. Practically all hardy and easy-to-root as well are the flowering scented varieties, none of which demand anything beyond normal cultural conditions. Here again water well, and allow the sand to become rather dry, but not arid, before watering again.

Spice-scented and fruit-scented varieties vary considerably in their needs, but here is how some of the more familiar kinds should be handled.

Use Rooting Powder

Cuttings from the nutmeg geranium (Pelargonium fragrans) and its varieties are made from the heaviest wood available and dipped in a No. 1 or No. 2 rooting powder. These are dependable rooters, but it is best to leave them in the sand for three or four months until the tuberous-type roots have formed.

Apple-scented geraniums (Pelargonium odoratissimum) are propagated from the very short joints which radiate from the main stem and then potted directly into 2-1/2″ pots filled with good soil. They will invariably lose all their leaves, but will fill out with new growth. So it is a must to know why there are brown tips on plants.

Ginger-scented, lemon-balm and almond-scented are all very easy to root under ordinary conditions.

Gooseberry-leaved geranium (Pelargonium grossularioides) is another very small-wooded variety which should he well shaded and given a little more than the usual amount of water, especially after the first week or two in sand.

Mint-scented varieties (Pelargonium tomentosam) including Peppermint, Pungent Peppermint and Joy Lucile require only the usual practices given cuttings.

Techniques To Ridding Your Garden Of Deer

January 4, 2010 by Tad Distin

Protecting your garden from unwanted snackers is a full-time job. Animals are quiet and can strike at any time. Deer look innocent, but they can wreck havoc on a garden in minutes. So how do you keep them away without doing anything to harm them? How do you find a a way that to keep the deer away? It is not easy. They can jump fences at very tall heights and can be fearless when they are very hungry. You must therefore play their own instincts against them and learn what things they have an natural aversion to.

As with most other animals, deer are very sensitive to smell. They are a comparatively docile form of wildlife and run away at the first sign of a predator. The urine of a predator is the best way to mark your territory–but there is something about walking around with a spray can of urine in your hand and spraying it around your garden. How about the edible stuff?

However, if you don’t happen to have any wolf urine readily available, you can find a realistic imitation. Many gardening companies make chemical sprays designed to keep away certain animals by smelling like the urine of their most dangerous predators.

Deer are known to be sensitive to high-frequency noises; either blow a whistle high enough for only animals to hear when you notice a deer around (inconvenient) or invest in an electronic whistle that can automatically play whenever its motion sensor is triggers or at specific times. This will make the deer steer clear.

Some claim chopped garlic has a strong enough scent to make deer turn back. Others swear by chopped up hot peppers. If you hang bars of Dove soap above your plants, that is also rumored to work. Other uses are moth balls, ammonia, vinegar, and cloves. Try things out until you find one that really works!

A new wave of deer-resistance has started. People call it ‘deeroscaping’ and use the term when they organize their property to be unpalatable to deer. This typically involves growing certain plants that deer find disgusting very close to ones they find delicious. It should hopefully keep them far enough away from your garden so they don’t even notice plants they might want. Any decorative grass is one example, along with sage, verbena, spearmint, and mums. Full lists are pages long.

The important thing to remember, though, is that in winter, deer will eat almost anything. In the summer, any one of these tricks will work, but in the winter you may have to employ as many of them as you can when the deer are starving.

Ways That You Can Make Your Home Energy Efficient

January 3, 2010 by Melissa Clemson

You can save money by making your home energy efficient. You can also help conserve natural resources. Most people are willing to practice energy efficiency. The problem is that it is hard to know which steps actually matter.

Most of the wasted heating and cooling costs occur around windows and doors. Sealing them can have a great impact on your energy costs. Apply weather stripping to stop drafts, and you gain the additional benefit of reducing dust and pollen levels. Check existing weather stripping to see if it has decayed. If it is absolutely impossible to add weather stripping, try to install heavy, insulated drapes at windows and patio doors. Use bean-bag draft blockers along the bottoms of external doors.

Fluorescent bulbs cost more than standard bulbs. However, they are actually a good investment. They not only consume less energy, but they last longer. Replacing your bulbs with them will save you money over a period of time.

The water heater in most homes is set far too high. This is not only unnecessary, but it can pose a hazard in homes where there are young children. Having tap water delivered scalding hot wastes energy twice. First, the energy needed to bring the water to temperature is wasted, because it is too hot. Then, before it can be used for baths or showers, cold water has to be added to cool it down.

Most older homes have inadequate insulation in their attics. Newer types of insulation are much more energy efficient than the types commonly used even two or three decades ago. Check both the type of insulation and how much there is. If needed, replace it or add to it.

A thermostat timer can also contribute to your energy savings. These work by adjusting the temperature at the times you select. You might choose a higher or lower setting, depending on the season, for overnight or while you are at work. Before you return, the timer will again change the setting so that the house is comfortable by the time you return.

How you use energy is also important. Turn lights off when leaving, whether you are going out of the room or out for the evening. Do not run partial loads of dishes or clothing. Since deep freezes work more efficiently when they are full, do not keep them operating for just a couple of items. Skip the preheat cycle on the oven except in rare instances where the food requires it. In the winter, put on socks or a sweater instead of raising the thermostat, and in summer, use fans for additional cooling.

Making your home energy efficient will not only save you money, it will help save our natural resources.
