Picking Out Your Outside Light Accessories Designed For Safety And Also Cosmetic Beauty

Most people who own their own property have a tendency to put some thought into the theme of their outdoor lighting. If you live in a gated community or spread out complex, some of the lighting may be taken care of for you, but that is not always the case. Every home and area you live in is going to be diverse,

It is everyone’s desire that their property be safe and that is a prime reason for outdoor lights, but it is an added bonus if you are able to get it to show off the distinct beauty of your property. It isn’t always a good idea to throw up lights just any old place. Chances are you may need more lighting for your home outside than just a regular porch light.

If you want to spruce up your home aesthetically with outdoor lighting then the design is going to need to be wholly up to you. Some adore to line the outdoor walk ways with lights so that people can see where they are walking, but they also do this as a decorative touch. My suggestion for when you plan to do this is to use lights that are not real bright but have a rather dull glow to them.

Lights that are too bright can cause problems with your neighbors as well as hurt the eyes at night making it difficult to see and thereby canceling out the safety incentive for the lights. You need just enough to see and that is it. You can go with busy colors, but really think hard about that as well. White or yellow tends to work finest.

When it comes to external home lighting for security reasons, you don’t want to have to light up your entire property at night, especially if you have a large house or a big lawn. That is a huge waste of power and of money and not only that you will not make any friends with you neighbors for a long way around. Instead, you should find motion detector lights that will only turn on when movement is detected. You can select separate sensitivity levels with these, so you’ll need to experiment a bit with them as you don’t want it turning on every time a leaf falls from a tree, only when a person is walking in the area. Motion detector lights have timers in them so that they will turn themselves of in a predetermined amount of time is not more movement is noticed. The correct thing about these is that they work well to ward off individuals who are lurking around at night who shouldn’t be there.

Whenever you make the investment into a new home, or a looking to improve the outdoor lighting in your home, the smart thing to do is to go to a home improvement store to find all of the upgrades on the lights that you desire. Most of the home improvement stores have staff on hand that are very knowledgeable in all of the area of home decoration and lighting or whatever their department is, so they can help you to determine your actual needs and show you what they have available. If you have an existing home security system, you can call your company and ask them what they recommend. If you install the outdoor light for reason of security, you should talk to your home insurance company as well because they may be able to offer you a discount on your premiums for the investment.

You can find sites on the net that you could go to locate outside light fixtures which will have loads of various light fixtures that you can choose from. Make the effort to learn what the perfect destinations are to look for these types of said accessories by going to http://outsidelightfixtures.com.

You’ve Done Your Homework Selecting A Birdhouse, Now What?

March 22, 2010 by Gene Wolf

In my last article I covered what you should look for when purchasing a birdhouse. This covered the area for the bird to nest in, the height of the entrance hole above the floor, the size of the hole itself, and height above ground for protection from predators. This column will tell a beginning birder what to consider to attract birds to your yard and once you have homes in place, what to do to attract birds to nest there.

Once you have decided on the type of bird you want to attract your should probably go out and purchase 10-15 houses, right? If you have quite a few houses you’ll have a backyard full of birds, won’t you? Unfortunately, no. At least not in most cases. Take for example the Eastern Bluebird. They are notoriously territorial and will drive rivals out of an area as large as 5 acres. If you were to put up 17 houses in a 30 x 40 foot backyard you can bet that only one of them would ever be occupied with an Eastern Bluebird.

If you have a small yard your safest bet is to set up a couple of houses. Have one for an insect eating species and another for a seed eating species. This way a breeding pair is not competing with another species for mates or for food and they would be generally agreeable to share their territory. Other birds, such as the Barn Swallow enjoy communal living. They do not require a territory anywhere near as large as the Bluebird and you could easily place several nesting shelves within 15-20 feet of each other without a problem. It all depends on the type of bird you want to attract so do your homework.

Once you have decided on a home, and the type of bird you want to attract is there anything else you can do? You bet! Once your birdhouses are in place provide the birds with nesting material. Building a nest is hard work and if you can give the birds a helping hand they will be more likely to nest in the area. I have large dogs. One is an Alaskan Malamute and I used to raise them. One spring I thoroughly brushed them when they were shedding their winter coats and ended up with a very large pile of dog hair. I placed it in the yard and within a few days the pile was completely gone. No, it had not blown away. I was amazed at the number of trips nesting birds made to the pile absconding with small tufts of fur only to return and take another beak full! Animal fur works well but horsehair, finely shredded newspaper or other similar materials can make fine nesting. If you have a paper shredder and shred newspaper or plain brown paper bags from the grocery store this will work well too. Avoid shredding envelopes with transparent cellophane windows because the edges of the cellophane can be quite sharp and will not dull over time.

Have you forgotten anything? You’ve set up the home, you’ve made sure it was designed for the bird you want to attract and you’ve set out nesting material. What else needs to be done. Don’t forget, early in the season the birds are returning from their wintering grounds or they’ve been through a long winter. Early in the season food, and even water that’s not frozen for a significant part of the day may be hard to come by. Find out what the bird you want to attract likes to eat and if it’s a seed eater set up a feeder with that food in it. With a house on hand, nesting material and food and water nearby you’ve done all you can to put out the welcome mat for the birds you want to attract!

Success In Grape Growing – A Pruning Achievement

March 21, 2010 by Gary Antosh

Success in grape growing depends greatly on pruning. Best time for this is the early months of the year. A warm day in January or February when the ground is clear of snow is ideal, but the job should be accomplished before the middle of March when the sap rises.

Pruning is perhaps the most important skill the vineyardist must master. He must realize that fruit is borne only on wood of the present season which arises from wood of the previous season. This means that last year’s new wood is the only source of buds which grow into shoots bearing probably one to four clusters of grapes each.

The problem becomes (first) one of cutting back a limited number of good canes to a few buds which will produce as many new bearing shoots as the vine can support, and (second) cutting off entirely all remaining (even good) canes which would over-tax the vigor of the vine. With experience the grape-grower learns to tell from the looks of the cane, the size and growth of the vine in the previous year, and the variety’s characteristics for bearing, which and how many buds to leave.

He must constantly plan ahead for new wood low on the vines, so that the vines do not have to spend too much of their energy maintaining a great amount of unproductive wood. This necessary balance between fruiting canes this year and new wood for next year’s crop is difficult both to explain and to achieve, but usually the tendency of the beginner is not to prune severely enough.

More trimming and shaping comes after the grapes have bloomed and set the bunches. Each fruiting cane tries to grow on out into a long leafy cane beyond the three or four clusters which have formed. To make the plant use its strength for the fruit, these should be snapped off at about the second joint beyond the grapes. New shoots will try to grow at these points and often at the joint opposite the grape cluster, but these should be kept broken off as summer progresses. Keep just enough foliage to support the plant properly by making food and to shade the fruit. Usually the bunches of grapes should be thinned by about one-third so that they will ripen faster and more evenly.

LED Grow Lights Review – Getting The Best Results From 2010 Models

March 19, 2010 by Cora Ladd

LED grow lights came on the market a few years ago to the tune of rejection and controversy. How can they possibly compare to the HID grow light standard and are they able to produce the same results as outlined in all the hype? By doing my homework and some basic comparison, I found that the best LED grow lights are more than capable of outperforming the standard.

When using LED grow lights, it is vital to understand that you are trading the high-intensity brute force concept (expensive energy cost) of metal halide and high pressure sodium grow lights for the focused power of an LED grow light.

With the typical HID setup, you must spend a crazy amount of money on accessories such as heat extraction fans, ducting, ballasts, and so forth. Because all wavelengths of light are emitted – from red to blue and all the colors in between – your plants are bombarded with excess light and heat that do not help the plant grow. With an average efficiency of about 15%, most energy from HID grow lights is thrown away in the form of useless light (light that cannot assist in photosynthesis) and potentially harmful heat. You may as well be lighting your money on fire.

The best LED grow lights boast 95% efficiency, which is to say that nearly all of the light emitted can be absorbed by the plants you grow. They produce a negligible amount of heat and near zero light is wasted. This is accomplished only by thorough research and development to target specific wavelengths of light which contribute the most usable energy to the process of photosynthesis. The most beneficial colors for growing plants is in the blue, red, and to some extent, orange wavelengths. If you think about this for a minute, it makes perfect sense because, after all, plants are green, which means they reflect all green light and most yellow light. This renders green and yellow light useless to plants – so why buy a grow light that wastes electricity on producing these spectrums?

To be sure, choosing the right LED grow light for your indoor garden has its challenges. Just like any other product in existence there is a wide range of quality represented by the various brands available on the market. From the very basic models up to the Mercedes of LED grow lights, styles range in price, shape, light colors, and power output that all play a part in determining your success as an indoor grower. I can tell you from experience that, for the most part, you get what you pay for.

It’s not to say that the only way to be successful is to buy the most expensive thing out there because cost is not the determining factor of quality. More important that cost is the quality and composition of the components used in manufacturing your LED grow light that is more closely related to growing success.

What you need to look for in an LED grow light is the power of each individual LED bulb. It is common to find 225 LED grow panels for sale very cheap – around $50-$100, however, you would totally waste your money. Each bulb in such an array typically has only 0.06 Watts. This is severely underpowered – unless of course you only want to grow a 4 inch tall plant. Because of the lack of power, you will get poor results, no canopy penetration, spindly plants, and some plants just wont grow or flower at all. The minimum power output to look for is 1 Watt per bulb – about 16 times more output than “bargain” LED grow lights and you are still saving a ton of money in electricity.

When using high quality LED grow lights you get powerful, highly targeted light to your plants. You will enjoy the success of thick, stocky plants with huge blooms and the biggest yields possible when growing inside.

Vibrant And Colourful Tiffany Lamps

March 18, 2010 by

One of the most famous lamp designs are Tiffany lamps. These lamps were designed and made by a person named Louis Comfort Tiffany in America. The vibrant colours lamps, ornamented lamps, dragonfly design and stained glass lampshades became very popular because they were quite unique and vibrant. Louis Comfort Tiffany was the son of a New York jeweller Charles Tiffany. He participated in vibrant artistic movement called Art Nouveau with full enthusiasm. This movement profoundly affected his creative ideas and influenced his artwork. The movement had by now reached its full development stage in Europe. Tiffany started making new designs and experimented with new things based on his creative ideas and artwork. He created lamps by working on glass and metals with unique new designs.

He was very clever and created a new sparkling stained glass in a whole spectrum of peacock colors which was the perfect medium for softening and diffusing the barrenness of electric light.

Louis Comfort Tiffany with his new innovative design created a masterpiece using different shades of color and light and implemented them together in such a way that the end result was magnificent. Collection of lamps fashioned from glass and metal was just breath taking.

The term “Favrile” is used to define designs which had colours in the glass among the tiffany lamps. The word “Favrile” means by hand and this technique was patented by Tiffany in 1880. These designs were different from the stained glass technique which was used in Europe.

In Tiffany’s methods the reheated glass was sprayed with vaporized solution of salts of tin or iron. These vapours were absorbed by the molten glass and created layers of colours when the glass was cooled down. With these glass sheets having different colours Tiffany designed lamps in different styles and shapes.

The variety of colours that could be made by this technique was amazing. By changing the metal in use the colours was infused in the glass. The copper vapour spray resulted in greenish blue to a rich ruby red and the cobalt vapour produced a spectrum of blue shades and if mixed with manganese it produced black colour. The mix and colour variation was even done by changing furnace heat and conditions.

Dragonfly, peacocks, wisteria, water lilies etc are some of the most famous designs of tiffany lamps which are very famous and almost loved by everyone. Earlier these lamps use to cost a fortune but with time you can find many cost effective lamp shades which are reproduction pieces that have captured the style of that period really well.

You can find these lamps searching through various online stores and they offer a wide range of these lamps with very reasonable price tag. It enhances your home decor and makes the whole place look more colourful. You can browse and search for sites offering these lamps shades at very reasonable price and make it a part of your living room.

Introduction To Hydroponics

March 17, 2010 by Michele Perdue

Hydroponics refers to the growing of plants without the use of soil using solutions containing minerals and nutrients. It comes from the Greek words hydro which means water and ponos which means labor. This method offers several advantages over traditional methods of gardening. One of these advantages is that the growing rate is faster than in traditional gardening. Besides this, the rate of the yield is much greater than with a traditional garden. In regards to growing marijuana with hydroponics, this is a very popular and increasingly common method for growing high quality, potent and stable marijuana plants.

The reason for this increased rate is because the plants are fed the nutrition that they need directly instead of having to get the nutrients they need from the soil that they are planted in. Given the fact that the water is rich in nutrients the roots on the plant do not need to be as large as they would need to be if they were growing in soil. Plants that are grown using hydroponics do not need to use as much energy to grow effectively. This saving of energy allows the plant to use more energy in the upper part of the plant. When talking about marijuana this means the plant can create a larger growth cycle and a better bud than a plant that is grown in soil due to the loss of energy that is experienced when the marijuana plant “Terra” grown.

There are advantages for the environment that make hydroponics a wise choice in the growing of plants such as marijuana. One of the main advantages is the fact that hydroponics uses a lot less water than growing in soil does. You are also not worrying about the erosion of topsoil since hydroponics does not use any soil in the process of growing the marijuana plants.

You may ask yourself how these plants get the nutrients that they need to grow stronger than plants that are in topsoil. These nutrients come as either water-soluble powder mixes or in a liquid form that allows them to go straight to the root system of the plant. This form of nutrients allow for a plant to grow quicker and stronger than plants grown by traditional methods. In the growing of marijuana specifically the most common method of getting nutrients to the plants is the use of NFT of Nutrient Film Technique. In the NTF method, the marijuana plants grow up through a light weight light-proof plastic film placed over a narrow, sloping channels about 3 inc//es deep. A continuous flow of nutrients is maintained through the channel via pumps. the roots systems of the marijuana plants grow into tightly packed mats.

Generally when you are talking about hydroponics systems for growing marijuana you need to make sure that you understand that there are two types of systems. The first is called an active system. The other is known as a passive system. In an active system, the nutrients are transported through a pump system. In a passive system, the nutrients are transported through a capillary system, or wick. With marijuana growing the most preferred method is the active system.

Many other advantages are able to be enjoyed when you use a hydroponics system to grow your marijuana plants. One of the biggest advantages is the fact that you are able to grow year round regardless of the weather. If you build a greenhouse then you are able to grow you plants no matter what the weather outside is. This means that you can expect to get a more consistent and reliable growth.

Hydroponics is an excellent way for you to grow your marijuana plants quicker, greener, stronger and with a higher quality bud. You can do this without the restrictions that you would experience with a traditional Terra based growth system. These systems are wonderful if you need to grow a plant in a quicker manner than with the traditional methods. This means more smoke in less time and with lass work. This is something that you will want to keep in mind for your future marijuana growing needs. This is a method that will help greatly in the growing of your plants.

Easy Ways To Maintain Drains And Pipes

March 16, 2010 by Scott Rodgers

Most of the homeowners don’t think about the drains until something goes wrong with them. In case some problems come then there are good, honest plumbing companies that do quality work at a fair price and you can call them up. However before you call for help, there are simple things you can do yourself that might rectify the problem. Similarly there are also maintenance tips that you can follow to keep your plumbing smooth.

Pipes and drains require regular maintenance whether your house is old or newly constructed. You should make a habit of checking the pipes two times in a week. If you notice any leak or broken connection then immediately call a plumber to solve it before it becomes more serious.

You can also be practical about preventing clogs in your drains and pipes by taking a few minutes every other week to do some simple cleaning. For example, your kitchen sink, will unavoidably suffer some build up of grease and food if you don’t keep the drains clean.

You can keep these elements from clogging your pipes by pouring about two tablespoons of ordinary liquid dish soap into the drain. As it drips down, pour a large pot of boiled water down the drain. The soap and hot water will cut through and loosen anything clinging to the sides of the pipes. By doing this regularly, you can prevent slow running or clogging of drains.

If you have older plumbing then keep a small bucket or tub under the pipes beneath your kitchen sink. If your pipes do happen to spring a leak, this will catch the water and prevent damage to your wood or tile flooring.

In case any of your drain or pipe has clogged then before calling a plumber first try an alternative yourself. Pour a cup of baking soda and after that pour a cup of vinegar through your drain. Leave it for few minutes and after that put hot and boiling water through the drain. This is an effective way of clearing a blockage.

It’s always best to know who you are going to call in an emergency rather than depending on the first plumber available. Call around and investigate a few drain cleaning companies before you have an emergency and choose one or two that you trust.

Ask the plumbers to give their contact number to you so that you can easily call them in any urgent situation. Keep their number at an easily approachable place.

A Few Maintaining The Landscape Of A Heritage Property

March 15, 2010 by Sarah Dudley-Jones

Landscaping historical homes can be quite difficult, but also a great way to enhance the beauty of the home. Although the house is important to take care of, the property around it is just as important. Even though there are businesses for gardening, home owners can find it therapeutic and an art in itself to master. For older homes, retaining some of the history is vital, especially outhouses. Outhouses are small buildings located away from the main house for bathroom use. This concept has been around for ages. For these modern times, toilet hire is necessary to help maintain the outhouse.

Every part of the outside of the house is important. Planting the right trees and flowers are just as important as what coat of paint to choose to paint a house. For older homes, creating an effect that is elegant without drawing the attention away is the ideal goal, even for the outhouse.

For the front lawn, it is best to try planting flowers and shrubs. This allows the property to look welcoming. However, it is also important to not plant too much. Because evergreen shrubs are easy to take care of, it is the best choice for planting bushes.

One of the best places and most important to landscape if the backyard. This is an area that can be used to thrill and awe guests if done correctly. There are many magazines that specialize in talking about good lawn care as well as featuring well done landscaping. Gazebos are a great addition to gardens as well as simple pebble walk ways. Other great features are natural fallen logs and small bridges over a small pond.

Also, as funny as it sounds, in the old days, outhouses were quite common. Today, people are revamping outhouses and use toilet hire companies to install portable toilets. This is actually a good idea and a convenience for house visitors.

Landscaping around such amenities should be natural and not emphasize the structure, but rather just have a path with minimal amount of flowers lining the way. The focus should be on other parts of the garden. For instance, a place to cultivate roses is very nice. They are not always as easy to maintain and are very beautiful. Using creeping vines gives an older and exotic look, while a pond with a small fountain might be calming to the soul.

Gardens usually exude a personality of their own. Though it cannot be confirmed, it might be due to the concept of Feng Shui. This Chinese belief is about putting together the right combination of element to create a balance. The balance is usually suppose to result in good fortune or a person or positive energy in an area.

The outhouse building should be included when applying Feng Shui. It is probably best to decorate the building similar to the main house. This will bring a continuity to the buildings. Also, the outhouse should be kept in excellent condition or it could prove unwelcoming for guests to use.

These are merely a few tips on how to go about landscaping. Although it may not seem so important, whatever is in the yard is important to take care of, including outhouses. Creating the best atmosphere not only allows the homeowner a small peace of mind, but also visiting guests.

The Colorful Indoor Window Gardens

March 14, 2010 by Keith Markensen

Like hundreds of other plant lovers, spend many happy days in their flower garden. But, always when the last chrysanthemum had been cut down by killing frost there was the dreary time, between late fall and spring, when all growing things were withered and no flower bloomed.

After one of these ruthless frosts, which snuffed all color from the world and made it sad, Mrs. Preston decided to build a winter window garden in her home.

Since then she has had twelve months of color. A scarlet amaryllis, almost hidden by the foliage of an Easter lily, glows in the window. A novelty in gloxinias, called Lady Slipper, blooms year after year in the same pot with only a short rest period between flowering. Several potted geraniums bloom in their sea son and two of them (Nutmeg and Rose) have fragrant, spicy leaves which add greatly to their desirability and lend an interest even when the plants are no longer in bloom.

A Gloriosa lily, with strange flowers, has climbed 6 feet to the top of the window to crown it with its gold and crimson beauty. There are orchids, some of which bloom during the winter holidays to furnish corsages for friends.

“I used to grow gardenias in my window,” says Mrs. Preston. “Now I have something new. It’s called Fleur d’Amour. It looks like a gardenia, doesn’t it?” she said, pointing to a plant with shining leaves and white gardenia-like flowers. “It has a gardenia-like fragrance, too, that I find captivating.”

The most prized plants in Mrs. Preston’s winter garden, however, are her African violets. It would be difficult for anyone to find a more colorful collection. Some are the usual ones bought at nurseries but quite a number are those Mrs. Preston has raised from seed.

One of her seedlings, grown-up, was mentioned in a magazine that gave the plant special mention for being outstanding in foliage and bicolored blossoms. Many of the other violets were also grown from seed. On the second shelf, near the curtain, is one of several doubles. There are also a number of singles, red, pink and white.

The window garden faces the east and south. It affords abundant light all day. The rack on which the violet plants on the right are seen was constructed so as to give perfect drainage. Underneath the rack is a galvanized iron, water-tight pan filled with cinders. It absorbs any surplus water accidentally spilled in watering. This pan is always moist and so acts as a humidifier to offset the too dry atmosphere frequently found in our modern homes.
