For people lucky enough to have a basement in their home there is a great opportunity for Basement Remodeling. These basements usually are constructed of cement or brick and are, for the most part, just used to store things. They give a family the opportunity to add a room to the home in which the family can join together, not only in the remodeling, but also in the finished product.

It must be decided exactly what the room is to be used for. Some people want it as an entertainment center for family and guests. In the Midwest, it might be used in case of a tornado and be stocked with supplies for an emergency. Whatever result is desired there are basic things that need to be done.

It is essential, of course, that the basement be cleared of all the clutter. If there is a washer and dryer there is no problem as these can easily be concealed in an attractive manner. For the purpose of this article, we will assume that the basement is to become a room for the family to enjoy videos as well as games or other pursuits.

Before actual construction is started electrical and plumbing connections should be examined to be sure they are in good order. Location of the plumbing pipes, electrical outlets and furnace vents should also be taken into consideration. Places for a toilet, sink or other desired additions should be marked. Some people just want to paint the basement walls but, since concrete or brick, draws moisture special materials are needed or the paint will simply peel off and mold can develop.

With regard to the basement walls, some people just paint them but this requires having special moisture resistant paint and does not cover electrical wires and plumbing. Assuming that one has decided to install walls, the next step is to put up studs around them. The concrete walls should be painted with a sealer then insulation, with a moisture barrier, is needed between the studs. Because of the tendency of the basement concrete to draw moisture, it must be moisture resistant. This will avoid having mold develop later.

Plasterboard or paneling is usually the preferred covering for the basement walls. Putting them up is not difficult. With plasterboard, it just involves cutting, fitting and nailing. The seams are then sealed and concealed with a special compound made for this purpose. With paneling, they are usually nailed or screwed to the studs.

The type of floor selected is very important as well as laying it correctly. Most people prefer tile since it is easy to clean. Again, concrete draws moisture so it is important that a moisture barrier be placed between the concrete floor and the plywood or tile pad that will be necessary for tile installation if that is the floor type chosen.

Painting is when the fun begins. Imagination can go wild with colors, artwork and whatever is wanted to make it a room that will be enjoyed by the entire family. Following the painting, the toilet or other facilities can be installed. Basement Remodeling can be an exciting project in which the entire family can take part and the finished product will enable them to spend many entertaining hours together.
