When we own a property, we feel as though we should be allowed to build whatever we want on it and make any changes we feel like. Though there are many things we can do without asking for permission, there are other things that require permission from the city. Depending on where you live and what you are trying to do, you may need garden planning permission.

If you are unsure about whether you need permission or not for your new project, contact the local authorities. Many cities have special planning departments who make these decisions. For more complex projects, it might take the city a long time to decide whether or not you are allowed to make the changes you are asking for.

If you are going to make additions that can adversely affect the lives of your neighbors, you should have a conversation with them before doing any work. For instance, installing lighting outdoors can possibly prevent them from sleeping if it floods in through their windows. Also, building a tall structure can ruin the views from their windows.

There are some things that you may feel you do not need permission for, such as fences or gates. However, there are some towns that have special rules about making new gates and fences.

People who live next to a highway generally need to check with the city if it is fine to build a fence, wall, or gate on their property. However, it is usually fine to plant hedges and trees.

It is usually safe to go ahead and do what you want with your back gardens patio area without asking for permission. However, there are some cases when you should ask. If you are going to be using the area for cars or as a driveway, permission may be required. Otherwise, feel free to turn the entire yard into concrete if you want.

If you plan to build a swimming pool, a summer house, shed, or tennis court, you probably will not have to seek the permission of the city. The same goes for greenhouses, enclosures for animals, ponds, and sauna cabins. If any structure that you build ends up taking up lots of space, either horizontally or vertically, you may need to ask for permission. If what you build is for commercial reasons, you most likely will need permission.

Before starting your next home improvement project, make sure that you have garden planning permission if it is necessary. Anyone who lives in a flat or plans on making a particularly large structure should contact the city first.
