Basic Tips For Unclogging The Bathroom Sink

Bathroom sinks tend to clog more than other sinks in your home. This can partly be true due to the large amount of hair that falls through the sink. Here are some steps you should follow to clear the clog of your bathroom sink.

If the clogging is very minor then a plunger can be used. To solve the problem, you should use this tool first. For using this tool, you do not need to take apart all the parts of your sink but you just need to add some water and then plunge it.

The best plunger to use on a sink is a force cup plunger. Plunge the sink at least four or five times before checking to see if the sink bowl has drained. If that solves the problem, run hot water from the faucet for a few minutes to be sure the problem is fixed.

If the sink is still clogged then you will need to dismantle the sink trap. You will be dismantling the p-trap. A p-trap is the pipe that dips low and then curves. The p-trap can be taken off with a pipe wrench.

In order to take out a p-trap, unscrew the nuts on its side. You can also put a bucket near the trap in order to keep things in that bucket. After taking off the trap, you need to clean that trap.

The trap will be full of grime and slush that never got a chance to go through the pipe. Clean the inner side of the p-trap with a cleaning brush and clean out all the large pieces that could possibly be a clog hazard.

When you will attach back the trap, check if the problem of clogged sink is solved or not. If the clog still persists then the clog could be present down in the pipe. In such cases, a plumbing snake that is less than 25 feet can be used to unclog the sink. Wear the protective gloves while using the plumbing snake.

Using the snake you can unclog the drain by pushing down the snake in the pipeline. Run the snake more than once to unclog it. However, if the problem is still not solved then repeat the above mentioned steps or call a plumber to solve the problem.

All the homeowners who have hired a maintenance plumber for their plumbing architecture need to pay extra attention towards the work of the plumber. The homeowners must discuss the plumbing repairs or tasks that would be covered under the contract. All the modifications and the maintenance tasks that ensure smooth running of the different plumbing fixtures or segments are handled by a maintenance plumber.

Various factors that need to be studied by the homeowners before availing the services of a maintenance plumber are described below. The tips would help you to monitor the services offered by a hired maintenance plumber.

A maintenance plumber must cover all the significant junctures of the plumbing architecture during the regular inspection job. The prominent plumbing segments such as pipes, drains, sewers, gutters, water heaters etc. must not be allowed to undergo any ailment. Such fixtures always carry the flow of water and hence, they are prone to frequent faults or irregularities. In addition, the plumber must report the issue to the owner of the house immediately and must seek his permission before taking any appropriate action.

Besides these, various plumbing fixtures of the home such as bathtubs, refrigerators, gas line, water tank, sewage tank, faucets, sinks etc. must be monitored regularly on the basis of their performance or efficiency.

Generally, the minor plumbing repairs can be fixed by the homeowners as well. The wise homeowners always try to learn some tricks of the trade so that they can fix the faults next time on their own.

Sometimes, a particular plumbing fixture may not complement the rest of the plumbing system based on the measurements or other factors. In such case, the maintenance plumber must propose the better product to the homeowner in place of the existing one. Put aside your hesitancy as plumber and present the suggestion to the homeowner in a comfortable manner. Such small things may make a big impact on the eventual efficiency of the whole plumbing architecture.

The job of maintenance plumbing requires the plumber to be proactive and apprehensive. A laid-back attitude would result in the negligence of plumbing faults. Consequently, the whole plumbing system would suffer a setback.

If you are a homeowner then you would be required to invest a good amount of time before hiring a skilled maintenance plumber.

Desalination Vs. Water Purification

Have you ever noticed some salty taste when you drink water? Do you think filtering the water means perfect for drinking? Well, let us be aware of the fact, even though we have filtered out minute impurities from water, it still consists of some aqueous salts which can only be eliminated by desalinization. The article below explains the major difference between water purification and desalinization.

Water desalination, also commonly known as desalinization is the process of making seawater drinkable. This includes removing of salt from the sea water. However, as far as water purification is concerned, purification of seawater sources as well as surface water (fresh water lakes, reservoirs, streams and rivers), ground water (wells and aquifer taps) and reclaimed water (from waste water plants) is also included.

Desalinization basically makes the water salt free and this was done in olden times also. The method adopted was filtration and distillation. This method is capable of removing only undissolved salts and not the dissolved ones.

All over the world, even the highest distillation plants make use of reverse osmosis technique to remove aqueous salts from the water. Using this technique, apart from the salts, most of the waterborne diseases are also removed from it making water amply pure.

Water filtering units available in the market are simply suited to purify the lake water. These cannot filter out the aqueous salts from it. In order to process the seawater, special distillation units are needed.

In addition to these, the two systems have some points of similarities as well. Any desalination system removing aqueous salts will serve as an adequate system for fresh water purification. Commercial scale Reverse Osmosis plants will provide desalination, converting seawater into drinking water. The same Reverse Osmosis plant will be able to convert lake or even sewage water into drinking water as well.

Distillation plants are successful in the areas where we have enough sources of energy to run these plants, to turn lake water or any other source of water into usable form. Seawater can not be made drinkable by micro filtration or other fresh water purification plants.

Desalinization is becoming more and more popular all over the world. Basically, the process can be done by two different methods that are, thermal and membrane. Membrane desalination utilizes either pressure or electrical current. Thermal desalination heats water to the point of boiling, creating steam which then condenses into fresh water. Thermal desalination is the easiest method of desalinating water at home.

Installing a garbage disposal in a kitchen sink is a straightforward task, although fitting the pieces together and checking for leaks can be a time-consuming endeavor. If you have a dishwasher, though, you will need to add a step to this process. The dishwasher typically empties into the drain pipe, but when you install a garbage disposal, it will need to empty into the disposal unit.

Fortunately, attaching a garbage disposal to a dishwasher is easy. The article below familiarizes the homeowners with the steps to connect the garbage disposal with the dishwasher.

To begin this process we shall first of all clean the bottom of the sink cabinet and keep a bucket beneath the sink. Using a pipe wrench, loosen the pipe and remove it. Any water in the pipe may be disposed in the bucket. Remove the drain pipe by unscrewing the long screws that joins the sink and the drain pipe.

Use a small putty knife to trim away the old plumber’s putty that helped seal the drain inside the sink, and lift the drain pipe out of the sink.

Connect the garbage disposal to the sink. Place a ring of plumber’s putty around the sink opening at a bead size of approximately 1/4 inch, and then slip the sink-mounting assembly and flange piece through the hole and down into the cabinet beneath. Press the drain piece down into the putty to compress the bead and form a tight seal. Hand-tighten the ring so, it will not shift from the sink. Wipe away any putty that presses out into the sink from the tightening.

Align the disposer with the three mounting ears on the sink mounting assembly. Holding the disposer in place, turn the lower mounting ring until all three mounting ears are locked into the mounting assembly.

Line up the disposal with the mounting ring. Turn the disposal slightly and it will tighten and finally lock into place with a click. Connect the unit to the wall drain pipe, using the replacement J-trap that came with the disposal.

The disposal plug should then be pushed into the outlet below the sink and the reset button be pressed. This will set the disposal ready for use. Open the water tap of the sink and look for leaks. Make sure the power is switched on and the disposal is activated. Also, ensure that the unit turns in. The water should keep running during the is process otherwise the unit may damage.

Building a new bathroom, or revamping an old one involves many complex decisions from basic plumbing practicalities to aesthetics such as window treatments. Big decisions have to be made on how to create a space that is flexible, efficient and attractive, whether it’s a large family bathroom or a bathroom for small family.

Before designing your bathroom you also need to consider that who will use the new bathroom and how often. In case the bathroom is being designed for children or elder or disabled people then you have to keep in mind certain safety factors. Decide that you want which type of fittings for your bathroom like a separate shower, double basin, towel holder and so on.

After deciding all these things, you can draw your plan on a plane sheet of graph paper. On this paper, mark the positions of all the doors, windows, radiators, cupboards, bath tubs, basin(s), showers, WC and any other fittings that you want in your bathroom. If you have small space for your bathroom then you may decide to put WC in a separate room.

There should be sufficient space around each of the fitting so that you can conveniently use that fitting. Otherwise it would become very difficult to use the bathroom properly.

Ask your plumber about your hot water system installation. You could also ask the plumber about the up gradation of your boiler or fitting a pump so that your shower works efficiently.

Don’t forget to plan for lighting in the bathroom while you are planning to design your bathroom as you require some special arrangements for bathroom lights. Proper lighting is very essential in your bathroom as it helps in providing you bright and directional light for doing make up or shaving.

You may wish to fit a combination of overhead and wall lights with special effects such as a concealed light behind a mirror or beneath a wall-hung vanity unit.

Storage space in bathroom is required by every homeowner. It is essential for hiding things that you don’t want others to see like spare loo rolls or toilet cleaners. Therefore, while planning for your bathroom also plan for the storage space so that you can utilize the space to maximum possible extent.

Know More About Bathroom Fixtures

May 25, 2010 by Scott Rodgers

Whether building a new home or remodeling, you’ll find there are many plumbing fixtures and accessories available. The choices can seem overwhelming and you’ll want to make sure the items you choose are both durable and decorative. Using the guide below, choose bathroom plumbing fixtures that will fit well with your decor plans while providing adequate use for the long term.

Take the fixtures that are practical as well as durable. It is good to choose fixtures that are highly strong and can be used for years with out wearing, rusting or molding. While choosing bathroom fixtures, you should keep some things in mind like: entire decor of your bathroom, color of floors, walls and the style of other items kept there.

You can choose a bathtub from four different styles available. The first one is old-type enamel cast-iron bathtub with the China-glazing finish. It is generally used in new construction and is extremely heavy. It does not produce any sound and can be obtained by spending $250.

Next, there is a molded plastic bathtub which resembles the cast-iron tubs but is usually thicker. This tub is comparatively light weighted and great for remodeling. This type of bathtub can come in several styles and colors, including a full shower/tub combination with built-in walls. It ranges in price above $250.

The enameled steel tub comes in white or a variety of colors and is finished with a ceramic-glazed material. This tub will cost you around $250. Next is the fiberglass tub, which can be installed on a platform or in the floor. It comes in different shapes and sizes. Some have spa features as well. This type of tub is quite expensive.

Toilet is also an important part of bathroom so it should be comfortable and practical. You don’t need to go behind a fancy toilet but it is better to choose a quality product. Dual-flush toilets having two flush buttons- one for removing liquid waste and other for solid waste removal is also a good option for your toilet as it saves water to a great deal.

The bathroom sink is important and has many uses. A popular bathroom sink is the V-shaped vessel sink bowl which is made of glass, copper or stainless steel.

The faucet that you choose for your bathroom should be made of materials that are rust-free. The flow of water through the faucet should be even. Try to choose faucets that matches well with your bathtub and sink. Faucets with the finishing of brass, brushed nickel, oiled bronze and chrome plate are very famous.

Landscape lighting is an important and often overlooked part of outdoor design. LED (light-emitting diode) landscape lighting offers many benefits for home and industrial outdoor lighting–including cost efficiency, environmental benefits and more versatility than traditional incandescent outdoor lighting.

Landscape lighting is used for decorative and functional purposes. Safety and visibility are the two most important functional reasons for using landscape lighting. LED lights can provide any level of lighting needed to provide visibility and outline safety hazards in the yard.

With the advancement in technology, today’s market provides us with numerous colors, designs and patterns. However, the most commonly used outdoor lighting design is up-lighting to provide ambient light in the area; down-lighting to provide targeted light from above. In addition to this, a dramatic accent can be provided to the yard through silhouette lighting.

Outdoor LED lighting offers many benefits for the homeowner. LED landscape lighting lasts longer than incandescent lighting. High-quality outdoor LED lights will last for up to 30 years.

More advantageous part is, these may cost more to buy, but they’ll last far longer than five incandescent lights. In addition, LED landscape lights are about 80 percent more efficient than other forms of outdoor lighting. That means you’ll save considerable money in energy costs over the life of each LED fixture.

LED’s are highly compact and light as compared to any other conventional lighting source. Thus, these are highly preferred among homeowners.

Safety is the single most important consideration in your outdoor lighting scheme. LED lights are an ideal choice for strip lighting stair risers and pathway or driveway edges. LED lamps are very easy to focus, making it easier to provide both ambient and accent lighting in your outdoor environment.

Though we have numerous types of LED lights but these can basically be categorize into two groups. One is solar powered and the other is a 12 volt powered. Solar powered lights are simple to install and run but, are less trustworthy. But the 12 volt LED need complete wiring. So, they cost more but are reliable.

Merits And Demerits Of Ionic Hair Dryer And Non-Ionic Hair Dryer

May 16, 2010 by Scott Rodgers

Since their introduction in the 1920s, hair dryers have slowly made their way into practically every bathroom. Purchasing, hair dryer forces you to choose between a variety of styles, colors, technologies, usages, weights and accessories.

The article below highlights two most common types of hair dryers that are, ionic hair dryer and non-ionic hair dryers. Also, based on the fact that every thing on this earth has its flip side as well, the article compares the two types of hair dryers.

To start with the non-ionic hair dryers, this is old and conventional work by simply heating air. Ionic hair dryers combine warmed air with negatively charged ions that are intended to shrink water molecules on the hair and lock in moisture.

People engaged in production of ionic dryers say that these dryers take less time in drying the hair than what is taken by the non ionic ones. But the good housekeeping institute has proved the manufacturers wrong. It has found through a survey that both types of hair dryers take almost equal time for drying of hair.

Apart from this, producers of the appliance also affirm that ionic hair dryers, as retain the hair moisture, also induce shine in them. These cause less damage to the hair. Furthermore, non ionic hair dryers make the hair dull and frizz.

When there is more shine to the hair, there is naturally less frizzy because the hair shaft is smooth and flat. Most reviewers agree that ionic hair dryers create less frizzy and fly-away hair than non-ionic models.

Having accomplished with more features, ionic hair dryers are little bit expensive as compared to the non ionic dryers. But one can afford them as far as the cost of hair is talked about which are much more precious and $300.

With a huge list of differences between the two types of hair dryers they also possess one thing in common. One should use either of the models very cautiously near water. Make sure, while using the dryers, the electrical cord should not come in contact with water.

Problems Associated With Water Softeners

May 10, 2010 by Scott Rodgers

A water softener device plays an important role in the homes where the water supply essentially comprises of hard water. It separates out the hardness of the water and the minerals responsible for dry skin.

If you are having trouble in getting soft water from the apparatus then check the salt level of the device. Check if the brine tank is filled or not. Fill it at least one third if it is not filled beforehand. Now, press the ‘Recharge’ button to resume the generation of soft water. Press the ‘Recharge’ button for the time specified in the instruction book.

Check the plug of the water softener for any kind of trouble. If you are getting anything on the power LED, reset the electronic controls of the water softener. You also can try replacing the fuse of the water softener or resetting the circuit breaker. Press the ‘Recharge’ button again to recommence the normal function of the water softener.

Instead of using hot water, use cold water while recharging your water softener’s settings. This will prevent the hot water from entering the softener unit. Set the timer and hardness level settings to a value that will yield the maximum efficiency.

Use of cold water instead of hot water while recharging the softener unit is also a good idea. The idea of using hot water is to keep a check on hard water entering into the softener unit. Position the timer and hardness level of the water softener unit for the maximum efficiency.

If the drain system of the brine tank is not working properly then check the drain hose valve of the unit carefully. Remove any bend or twist in the hose. Also, remove any dirt by dismantling the nozzle, valve, brine tank and other parts of the water softener unit.

You can also replace the motor seal component of the water softener when motor pauses or stops working. This pause is because of the wearing out of the parts after some time.

If your problem is a tricky one then better call the experts. Always use protective dress while working with electric appliances.
